Can someone help me understand why my Waze mobile application never talks to me? It Speaker icon is enabled, so what gives?

Also, I drove over a virtual coin. What was that?

    Thanks Paul :)

Yeah, there's something strange about controlling the volume in Waze. I have issues, too, and have to not invest more time trying to figure it out.

Sometimes the phone's traditional volume control with regulate the volume, other times it will not. Then, there's an additional volume control inside the app itself: Settings > Voice & sound > then you'll see a "volume" control half way down.

Just below that, there's another control called "Play sound to phone speaker". I think I know what that means, but it doesn't seem to do anything on my phone. Documentation is so poor. I'm on a Moto phone.

Also make sure you have it set to either alerts only or sound on (alerts only will only announce alerts, sound on will announce navigational instructions) The virtual coin thing happens when you are new to the app to get you points. when you report things or even just drive you earn points, which over time boosts your rank. the higher the rank the more weight your reports and votes carry. Meaning if you post a police alert it will take more down votes to remove it, or if you vote on a alert your vote will have more weight to keep it alive vs kill it off.

I'd like to recommend that you also turn off voice notifications for cars on the side of the road, etc.
That's one of the bigger annoyances that people mention.
Leaving it visible on the map works well for me.
    Example screenshot attached. :)

As far as audio goes, it can be convoluted to get it all working. There's somewhere around 35-40 different volume adjustments in my phone and typically you can only adjust the 1 or 2 that are active at that moment. Phone call volume is adjustable when on a call, media volume is adjustable when media is actually playing, etc.

You might start out with Waze playing through the phone speaker and moving up from there. Restart Waze after changing volume and speaker settings and see if that helps. :)

I don't use audio alerts but I zoom my map out as far as I can before the graphics for police, hazards, etc turn into dots (which gives me about 5-8 miles of early warning, so all I need to do is glance at it). It saved me yesterday allowing me to anticipate JTK on TMG. And alerts tend to get redundant and annoying. But you can change the voice if you like.

Are you saying that the only way to get alerts is to enable the "Alerts Only" icon? And the only way to get the sound for NAV instructions is to enable the "Sound On" icon? The two don't work together only separately?

Sound on does both Alerts and Nav instructions. Alerts only is alerts only. I've run both and stuck on alerts only as of late. BTW the "media volume" is the volume control for Waze like Youtube, etc. Good luck!
