Sorry, guys, I didn't see this post earlier.

This should be all sorted. I have databases for both NZ/A and US firmware. Only use upload tool v1.25 for NZ/A firmware. Use upload tool V1.22 for US firmware. I have two different formats of my databases with the same content, so whether you have NZ/A or US firmware, I have an up to date GPS database for you. I was running NZ/A firmware, but wanted to go ahead and test the new US firmware for people. My US Format NZ database uploaded fine after installing the R3_v148.207.114.db181004 from Uniden US website. I haven't tested a redflex position, but I will do later today. Not expecting any issues, as Uniden has not released any new US GPS database, or created any new incompatibility.

If anyone (@Alexandero @Sonyxperiageek @Scott2Ride ), accidentally overwrote their NZ/A firmware with US Firmware, and wants it back, I know a way to send you back again. ;)

I.e. uniden is just keen to stop people buying US models, but actually they are the same on the inside, and can be made to run whatever you want.

Okay, my testing just now confirms R3_v148.207.114.db181004 from Uniden US website, works with my NZ Database and correctly alerts to NZ Redflex position in Wellington as expected.

Hi Mithheru

Been closely watching this forum for the last 12 month and now have joined in.
I have just tried to update the firmware on the R3 and received the same error as Winterbrew. (Not Correct Model. Download Failed)
I just got off the phone with the supplier in Australia and they tell me that I have to send the unit back as the original firmware was hacked prior to loading.

If there is a way of saving me the time of sending this back I would really really appreciate it.
I also see that it is possible to update to the latest US firmware and then load the Aus/NZ database am I right to say this?

If you could please point me in the right direction or give me a hint where to look it would be appreciated.

Keep up the great work guys.

Regards

Think we can sort this out for you.

Damn, I'd be pretty cross if Uniden accused you of hacking your R3, when you actually hadn't. I'm not even suggesting a 'Hack'. My GPS databases rely on unmodified official Uniden firmware options, the content of my databases are build from scratch and completely revised and updated. I.e. they are designed to work exactly the way Uniden intended.

Anyway, I also know how to interconvert the R3 for both the official US and NZ/A firmware. My databases with the exact same content are also now available and supported for both firmware versions and upload tools. I'm also working on a new Australia release with all of Melbourne corrected. Perth has already been revised in my latest AU only GPS database. In contrast, Uniden has not done anything to the Australia part of their GPS databases since at least 30 March 2018. All the recent changes by Uniden going to V1.36 are for New Zealand only.

Hi,

Just received a R3 from a friend that lives in the US (I'm from Israel).
I'd like to load the detector with Israeli speed / red light cameras whos coordinates and directions appear on Waze quite well.
Will appreciate your help underanding how to break down and reassemble the 1.48 firmware with customized coordinates and directions of cameras.
Would be also nice if Uniden provided an import/export tool for user-defined marks.

Thanks,

Sorry, mate, Israel is not going to happen any time soon on the R3. I have no reference points in the R3 data that matches anywhere near your latitude or longitude. If Uniden ever figure out how to rescale their GPS mapping to your part of the world, then we might have something to start working off.

Thanks for the reply,
can you share some details on how to add coordinates and their direction as cams ?
If I add a user marks same place where a red light cam exists -- can that be somehow read as a reference point ?

I don't know if it is possible to read out the User Marks from the R3 onto an attached computer. This would probably need an understanding of the internal software/firmware. Only Uniden knows how the firmware works, and I don't think even for them they have software which could read out user marks.

Basically the R3 is based upon 32 bit hardware. The GPS data is stored internally in the form of two 32bit numbers for latitude and longitude. However, how it scales those 32bit numbers into a conventional GPS coordinate is not linear across the scope of its global coverage. Uniden is probably trying to maximise the accuracy of the GPS given the limited amount of memory available. This therefore makes it really accurate for the areas where it is intended to be used.

Therefore, I cannot guarantee that the R3 is even encoded in the current firmware to allocate memory to the part of the world which includes Israel. Even if it is, without any points indicating the range or a specific value for its internal 32 bit numbers, I cannot make any predictions about any coordinates in your area. I could make estimates for Israel based upon reference coordinates in New Zealand or Australia, but over that distance, the degree of error, and issues with it not being linear over long distances means my predictions are likely to be hundreds or thousands of kilometers away from where I intended. Moreover, I also then have no way of actually measuring where that new alert actually ended up.

If we had access to regular commercial flights over Israel, with an active R3 onboard, with regular updating and testing on many flights, we might be able to start to get an idea of where the R3 thinks Israel is located in its memory. In short, its too hard, and without Uniden's official help on this, or them releasing an Israel version of the R3, it unlikely to happen.

Thank you Mith,
I understand the challenge, I was under the impression that it's possible to load / translate coordinates but I see it's not that easy.
Version 1.48 has both DB and firmware on the same file.
I guess it's not worhwhile for me at the moment to try and take the DB apart modify it and re-upload to the R3 as the values mapping is not known.

I've just made a major breakthrough in understanding and more accurately mapping the conventional GPS coordinates onto the R3s internal memory. This should now give me 100% accuracy of binary conversion to GPS coordinate. I think I can also now extend and apply this to other countries. Therefore, I'd be happy to have a go at putting a camera alert outside your house in Israel now.

Okay, I'm now releasing GPS database version 2.08 / 10 March 2019 for the Uniden R3.

Again this is supported on both NZA and US firmware running R3s. I think you'll find this latest update has a lot of improvements.

I'm keeping the database tracked as before, so please contact me directly if you would like a copy. Also let me know which firmware you are currently running so I make sure you get the correct version.

Just tried to install the R3 NZ firmware with v1.25 tool to one of my US R3's ;

View attachment 90965 View attachment 90966

--- DOUBLEPOST MERGED ---

Once you install 1.25, it deletes 1.22, and won't let you reinstall it again, saying a newer version is installed, so you have tyo un-install 1.25, and re-install 1.22
I just got a us r3 today and get the same thing
I posted this in another thread. But may be of relevance here.

I think I have managed to successfully update my USA Uniden R3 with the NZ database.

I bought a new R3 off Ebay and tried updating it tonight. I got the database from Blulink using this link...

https://blulink.co.nz/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/R3NZ_137.196.112.db134.zip

I installed the USB drivers https://blulink.co.nz/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/CP210x_VCP_Windows-DRIVERS.zip

I tried updating using the NZ Blulink firmware tool V1.25 but it said the model and database wasnt compatible, The file name was R3NZ_137.196.112.db134.bin so I changed the file name and removed the NZ so it read R3_137.196.112.db134.bin

Still had the same failed update

But....

So I downloaded the USA firmware tool from Uniden that contains V1.22 . It also has there database in it as a separate file
http://support.uniden.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/R3_20181005.zip

I then tried to install the renamed R3_137.196.112.db134.bin file using the V1.22 tool.

It downloaded it andthis time it actually went through the install process (which hadnt happened before) and looked like it was going to fully install it. But at the very end it said retry.

However... when I check my loaded firmware current version it now says 137.196.112 and says 2018/04/03

So I think shes worked :bubblewoop:

Or am I off base here?
Have you gone for a drive and tested it I thought of doing the same thing

I can't seem to load the AU/NZ database imnrunning the same firmware how did you achieve this
-- Double Post Merged: --
Yeah, v1.22 updater won't load the R3 NZ firmware file, it just says wrong file, and you have to use the v1.25 from Blulink
Are you saying the v1.25 will load AUS/NZ DATABASE ONTO a US R3?

Sorry, its unclear from what I wrote (with regards to firmware files);

v1.22 will only work on US R3's, but will not upload the official AU/NZ db from BluLink on a US R3, it will only upload the US db file

v1.25 will only work on an NZ/A R3, and will upload the official AU/NZ db from BluLink on a NZ/A R3. It will not upload the US db file to and NZ/A R3

The db files are formatted differently for NZ/A and US units
