To avoid spam PMs to users by brand new accounts, maybe we can require them to have General (introductory post) or Beginner status (50+ posts) before they can private message other users. An exception could be when the recipient is a Mod, Security, or Admin. That way locked out users could make a new temp dupe account to get in touch if needed.

Overall this could prevent user joins for sending PM spam.

Thoughts?

I'm against limiting newbie users from sending PMs. I think abuse should be reported to an admin. I haven't reached Beginner level yet (1 post away thank you), but I've had three private conversations, which were very useful to me. (No Happy Endings involved). From my brief time on here, it seems like there is always an admin around.

Just my 2 cents.

We don't limit PMs from being sent - haven't really had the need to do it. There's not widespread PM spam going on, and most people report spam really quickly when it comes via PM. We also have a ton of honeypot accounts on RDF that would detect spam as well.

Our spam detection/assimilation engines do a really good job now with spammers anyway.

--- DOUBLEPOST MERGED ---

As a side note, I think we're probably going to do some consolidation of sections shortly - perhaps even today. We have a lot of sections that should be consolidated when it comes to website/dev/addon related stuff, like this one. Could really all take place in Bug Reports & Forum Tech Support.

I received a PM a while ago from a user with 0 posts. Brought up the same concerns as well. Havent had any issues other than that one time.
