2 York police officers among 7 arrested for various charges including drug trafficking | The Star

This makes me pissed. Sure, crooked cops are all the rage these days, but Constables regularly make over $100,000, and even when they are charged with a bunch of crimes, they are suspended WITH pay.

It's ridiculous. Cops in Canada are WAY overpaid, and politicians who dare run on cutting their budgets don't get into office. Canadian citizens RAGE at me when I suggest they should be paid less.

Then again some manager in some police service I work at makes $157,000 a year. (she's not a sworn officer). That's ridiculous to me.

F******************** I hate certain things about this country.

If Canadian cops had a death rate closer to the NYPD, sure, I get it, but cops in the US work FAR harder, have FAR fewer resources, and get paid FAR less. So it's either US cops should be paid more or our cops should be paid less.

Take your pick

Are you kidding me, those Canadian cops could get frost bite sitting on a bridge shooting drivers in the rear with dragon eye, get bit by a wild animal, etc. Lol
And Us cops risk attacks by ferocious monkey ...raise their pay

I'll let out a little secret. A friend of a friend mine used to have open access to payroll software for a major policy department. She could query just about anything regarding paychecks. What she found was interesting and surprising. Most ACTUAL pay figures did not match the pay figures reported in response to a FOIA request. If fact, actuals were 2x+ higher for certain officers due to special assignments and overtime. For example, several officers on a $60K USD salary had made $150K in 6 months. Many others exceeded their salaries by 20-30K by June.

People need to FOIA audited payroll figures, not projected annual salaries. :argh:

Fair point. I will say that our Sunshine List is pretty transparent. Any public service person making >$100,000 a year in the previous year as per Line XXX (I forget which line) in our income tax filings shows up on the List. Basically if you gross 6 figures and taxpayers pay your salary, you end up on the list.

I love it! I've gone to a few town halls and one of the first things I bring up when they talk about their challenging roles and such is their salary....

It shuts them right up and the crowd is immediately on my side because of the jealousy/hatred.

Win.

Ahh, different system here. It's all by FOIA, no such statutes exist around me.

What bothers me the most about LEO salaries is that there's usually an inverse relationship between danger faced on the job and compensation.

In Vancouver, city cops with overtime make stupid money. Then after they retire with a huge pension, they go work at BC Transit, make another stupid high wage then draw a second pension, double deep the system...all paid for by us the taxpayers...

Problem is in how folks are wording the FOIA requests.

Its not just base salary. Incentives and bonuses and overtime. Example: incentives to work night shift, acquire different cert levels, acquire different certs, like accident reconstructionist or drug lab processeing, instructing, etc, etc, etc.

Plus, cops earn a lot of overtime.

Ask how much compensation they got in total LAST year. Not what thier yearly salary is.

I disagree with cops being overpay, If I had to put up with asshole (can I say that word here?) like me, I would want double. The real problem is people higher up the chain that do nothing and get paid 3x the amount. Not cops themselves.. Our tax money is wasted on much more stupid things than our police force. Like drug dealers for example.

See what I did there?

Yup. This same friend told me how they once received a foia request for all monies paid from lost lawsuits against the pd. They ps never lost a case because they settled every single one. 0 dollars were reported.

Well, once one gets those numbers too, they need to req how many hours leo worked. If he is working 70 hours a week for 100k, thats not the best hourly wage....

As i said, cops earn lots of overtime.

thanks

I agree that SOME police are paid WAY too much here. Traffic cops and the one's busting peoples balls without any real increase to public safety (revenue collectors) f**k those guys. They can make minimum wage.

Swat/gang unit, those guy's put up with bullshit day in and day out and maybe deserve a bit more. Having said that, those guys could swallow a nail and spit up a cork screw they're so damn CROOKED!!

I knew a guy who was with our local PD and his partner basically told him when he started "What happens on the street, stays in the car" Meaning, whatever shady **** they do doesn't leave the car. He quit the police after 1 year because of that.

I'm not actually sure why ANYONE would want to be a cop. You basically get **** on by everyone and everyone hates you, then you turn into a miserable prick who brings that into your home, so 90% of these idiots are divorced. Even my friends parents that have retired say you'd have to be retarded to join the police these days.

You Canadians need to reject the constitutional monarchy and become a republic. Give your provinces more central authority and it will clean up all this overpaid civil servants real quick. However, you will need to monitor your educational standards or those might slide a bit like ours does but the rewards far outweigh the risk.

NYS makes it easy. You can see all state workers civil servant pay (including overtime, etc.). So essentialy cops, teachers, state workers, etc.

SeeThroughNY :: Payrolls

The trooper that gave me a ticket makes $137,749.
