And from what I remember, the battery powered units were not known for outstanding range.

well of course that's why I never went with a battery powered detector I mean your amplifier can only amplify as much power as it's aviable to it...thus a constant 5v or 12v power from an alternator is a best case scenario...battery powered radar detector designed in the days where batteries were just getting better was a massively ****ty idea on the Escor t part...that was before LIPO or anything else they used NICADS or nickel metal hydrates whose power curve is atrocious...at least alkaline provided a nice power drain vs time until the end where it just dove into oblivion.

They are shockingly pretty good. Lol. I'm real world experiences I was pretty surprised at how far I could pick up Ka signals. Not near to what we can with the R series. But pretty good. Nonetheless. The K band falses though will have you wanting to throw it out the window! Haha

You have the 2 and the 3 or the 3 and the 4?
Would you consider their detection range comparable to city mode ?

2 and 3. Its was more closer to my passport 8500 x50. It would pick up C/O Ka hits from a very far distance. But I always felt like it would go to sleep. Lol
