We have several old iPhones around the house since upgrades. Is there a way to use these as a permanent fixture in the vehicle for waze to run all the time instead of trying to use my regular phone? Thanks!

Problem is hotspot hosting off your main phone can be a pain. It likes to shutoff (on iOS with Verizon unlimited anyway) after it sees no activity for a while. It can also drain your main phone battery a lot on the host hotspot, so you may still need to power that.

On Android carriers might put their own hoops you need to jump through. This true on unlimited plans. If it’s pay your way they might make it easier to chew up data as fast as you can.

So it depends on OS, Carrier and Plan on how annoying it is every time you get in your car).

Also some phones don’t like being a host and a client at the same time. So if you are at your house on WiFi it won’t host until you have driven away and on cellular.

I would never want to have to make sure it’s all working and running every time I get in the car.

I think you meant say waze is an approved app for CarPlay with iOS 12.

Waze for CarPlay is still in beta.

And the OP didn’t mention a CarPlay capable car radio.

Tethering with my Verizon grandfathered* unlimited plan (because I'm old), it's no problem. I use an earlier version of WAZE and just have it mounted on a small phone, lying at a an angle in my speedometer well. I do have a sticky mat so it doesn't slide.

*I don't know about the current unlimited plans

Nothing is released yet for Waze or Google Maps. You need to be on their Beta list to get it.
It shouldn't be long though.

Sure, run your current phone as a Hot spot and connect the old phone to it and run Waze. I have done it a few time and works great.

@LexusISF

Google Maps for CarPlay just downloaded :)

I have not had a chance to test it myself.

Thanks for letting me know. From what I read thought Waze would be first but but it is good to see this app was actually approved by Apple for Carplay. Will try it later.

It worked flawless. Wish it would show posted speed limit like Waze and Apple Maps.

I’m testing the Waze beta. It has had 2 updates in 24 hours. They are moving fast. It has a couple of bugs, but looks good.
