Guys, I've got a Motorola phone (Android 6) and I'm wondering if there is a cheap way to get data going on it so I can use Waze. There used to be a company that sold SIM cards for $75 and that bought you some finite amount of data. You had to use it up in a year or something like that. I'm not going to sign up for a '$30/month' data plan and am wondering if there are alternatives. Thanks.

Free Data: FreedomPop™ Free Data Plan & Data Usage before the 30day trial downgrade to free plan and it's 200MB/Month free 4G LTE data every month no limits. Waze usually uses less than 100MB and if the phone is set to not perform updates over cellular data then you shouldn't run out.

Wireless android auto headunit puts waze right on the dash and nothing to plug in. I love it.

Bravo, thanks for that reference. "Free" can be good - - however, what do they want in return?

Do you have personal experience with that company?

My in-laws have used them for free data and for a cheap hotspot... Supposedly it works, there is plenty written about them so look up some tips for using them and see what's good... Since you are only using it for Waze data there is limited personal info so no major privacy concerns

@thebravo Thanks. I did read about them this afternoon. Still wondering if I see the 'rest of the story'.

My phone (and plan) support 10GB of tethering. If I ever need to use data for some other thing, I just use that.

I tether on mine as well (it's not technically included with my plan, but I rooted and bypassed the restriction), I use that for running a second phone with FR24/Flightaware, Iradar when I travel... and at work so I can use multiple phones for wazing simultaneous aircraft traps

I ended up getting a 12month plan with Freedom Pop for $50. They claim unlimited talk and text with 1GB LTE data each month. I did get it working with much effort. Minor issue needs to be corrected on their side.

I used Waze today for a few miles. A bit concerned about how much data they show I've consumed already. I don't think the "free" solution @ 200MB per month would ever work.

I don’t see all that much data having been used by Waze in the past, but it’s been a while since I’ve kept track. If you’re leaving from home or work, try to pull up your destination and route within WiFi range to minimize data usage.

you should be able to see what app has used data and how much... I found that I had things on the phone that were also using data, turning those off helped. I use waze about 1.5 hours a day an in the last month have only used 150 MB

Thanks, that's good to know, @thebravo. I've been able to set updating to wifi only. I'll have to see what else is consuming the bandwidth.

Look for apps like news stocks and such as those often update live to show current info.

I am actually going to be looking into this for when the hardware-related stuff for the RDFGS project comes into play, but maybe this wouldn't be a bad idea to look into sooner. I'm sure we could get a bunch of people here data-only SIMs under our own MVNO and save a bit of money for everyone... hrm.

I'm finding that I need to go into each app individually and restrict them from using background (cellular) data. If you use the global restriction setting, while much easier, it gives you a permanent warning message you can't cancel.

I had about two hours of drive time with Waze today. People in my area appear to love reporting everything/anything. I tagged two LEOs. Very proud of that.

I will say it adds a new dimension to keeping an eye on things - - I like that. I think I have the crazy data usage controlled now.

@nomore55 are you sure that $50 data plan isn't for 6 months? I show unlimited Talk/Message/2GB monthly data for $72 every 6 months and unlimited Talk/Message/1GB data for $36 every 6 months? Of course their could be Regional pricing depending what outside Network one's home address puts them on. Do you know what Network you are on. My SIM put me on AT&T.

Anybody have the amount of data that JBV1 uses in an average month of 3 hours driving 5 days a week?

    It's 12 months for $50.

I bought this package directly from them. Walmart may sell it too, Best Buy did not. Definitely ATT, I won't use anyone else.

It's been some effort, but I think everything is functioning as intended now. It might be a bit of a Mickey Mouse setup. You have to use their messaging app, which you download from the Play Store. You also place telephone calls through the messaging app. I sense they aren't using the traditional channels on the cellular network where you'd normally find phone calls being made. The 1GB limit should be more than adequate for me. Waze doesn't seem to consume much data once you find a WiFi setting that needs to be altered. I dunno, $50/yr is pretty cheap for this offering. Unused data might be rolled forward, haven't quite sorted that yet.

They do offer the completely free setup with 200MB/mo. I think you've got to sign up for one of their other plans and then downgrade to the free plan before 30 days elapse. I might be able to get away with 200MB/month, I'm sure most could not.

This is the level of info I see when I log into their dashboard:

    Capture.JPG ure.JPG

I figured out why it keeps using those chunks of data and have been able to control that. It's what someone else had mentioned: when possible, start your Waze trip while connected to Wifi and that drops data usage down to almost nothing.
