    Hi Guys,

I'm a new member here on the forum and this is my first post! After wanting something new coming from a Max 360, I have recently purchased an R3 and an R1 for both my trucks. I have been running the R3 for about a month now and the R1 for roughly 5 days. After multiple run ins with LEOs with my R3, I felt the detector is not giving me the performance I see in the youtube videos and reviews here. For comparison, I purchased an R1 for my secondary vehicle and on the way home from the store, the R1 alerted me 1.5 miles before I saw the trooper on the side of the NJ Turnpike. I have never gotten such an early detection with my R3. Today, I was driving in town and a township PO was running 34.6 - I made a U-turn and gave put some distance in between us to see how much range I am getting. Well, please see the link of the youtube video below as I am getting .3 mile range on KA band.

I am running this detector in advanced Mode - KA Segmentation, 2,4,5,6,8. I have X and K band turned off. Is it possible I bought a faulty detector? Any help is very much appreciated!

    Thanks!

    Joe

You'll only be able to get as good of detections as your surrounding terrain will allow you to get. Where exactly was the LEO? Which way was his radar facing? Looks like urban terrain which is a factor etc etc etc.. The distance in the video can be typical for any detector being limited by urban terrain (tall building etc).

Have you taken the R out on any interstate trips/commutes?

The LEO was on the left side of the street. I didn't want him seeing me with my phone in the video and give me a cell phone ticket. The front of his truck was pointing at me. I have taken it on the highway multiple times and the range feels like the max360 and other detectors I have had. The first alert I got with the R1 was about 1.5 miles away which was a substantial longer detection than I have ever got with my R3.

I'd say your R3 is fine. You're going to have some better detections than others and terrain is the biggest factor. The videos you see of the insane long detections are when all the variables are just right letting the R series shine to it's fullest.

I would 100% agree with you, but I have been running this for 4 weeks with multiple detections .. and I have never said to myself, 'wow, there is a real difference between the R3 and the max, or the 9500ix' ... The other day I was on the expressway doing 70mph .. I got a KA alert, .5 miles he was down the road. There were no bends, no structure, I was flying on the expressway.

The first alert from my R1 impressed me. I said to myself, this is a long range detection .. I was coming over a bridge and he was through the tool plaza on the other side of the bridge. The first detection I received was on the complete opposite side of the bridge. Man, I don't know what to do!

Yeah unless you have your own radar gun and a friend to help out with testing it can be hard trusting a new radar detector.

Thanks for trying to help man! I was reading a post by a member Salty where he mentioned he was unhappy with the R3 and had to get a replacement via the warranty. I am wondering what issues he was having.

What firmware version you runnin? If you updated, did you do the “factory reset” as instructed?

No problem. . I wish I could help more. I just know I've seen a few people think they might have an issue when they first get it, but everything turned out to be just fine. Some people even sent in their detector to Uniden to get another one under warranty which is an option you have too if you really think there may be a problem. I'm not sure exactly what issue Salty was having. Good luck on whatever you decide to do!

there were some issues reported with the first batch of people getting poor range. if its under warranty send it to uniden saying you own both and this one exhibits poorer range than your other R series detector and they should send you out another one. the exchange should take less than a week.

I am running 1.37. I didn't need to do an update as that is the latest firmware version.

Since you have a 1 & 3, goto a shopping mall where there are door openers. Find the farthest point where the 1 registers. Then turn off the 1 and put the 3 in the exact same location and turn it on.
1’s have proven themselves to be slightly more sensitive than 3’s. Some have speculated it’s because of the gps. Any way, test them one at a time so they don’t interact and let us know what you find.
And make sure they are set the same way, Highway mode no filters.

Ok, so yours is a new batch with 1.37 loaded. I got mine R1 in March and had to do a 1.37 update.

Thank you very much. I believe I will also be able to go to the store and exchange it for another R3. BUT, he may have stock from the same batch of all R3's with poor range, right?

The only "batch" that had some issues were the very first detectors off the assembly line when the R series was first introduced last year (the majority of them were just fine)

Well, I can drive to the store on Monday and exchange (if need be) or send the detector in to Uniden, wait for them to receive it, and wait for it to arrive to me. Also, the R1 had Firmware 1.31 on it when I was getting super early detection. I updated the FW 3 days ago and haven't driven my truck since. I don't think the firmware should impact the range negatively in any way.

Initially on the R3 I was running KA wide to see the frequencies I was reading here to know which channels in the segmentation to keep on. When I was running it wide, I thought to myself the reason why I was getting a later detection is because it is scanning all bands and frequencies etc. I turned everything on and Segmented KA band and it is the same. Oddly enough, maybe there is something wrong with it. The comparison really did push me over the edge with the R1. I even thought about taking the R1 out of my truck and putting it in my Daily Driver!

Yes. The R1 I have came with FW 1.31 and I had to do a FW update to 1.37 on it. BUT, the R3 came with 1.37 loaded already.
