In front of a Waffle House yesterday morning in Houston, this Bimmer had this contraption screwed onto the front license plate. Nothing in the rear. Jammers? Ancient? Sheer curiosity drives me to ask those who might know better than I do.

Really? RFID-type unit like EZ Pass, etc? Some ancient version or something? I’ve never noticed anything like it and didn’t see any others I noticed on the area.

I saw no area I could identify as a senor or transmitter, nor any visible wiring (though of course it could be a slick install), so I was left wondering what it could possibly be.

Looks like EZ Pass. Lots of cars in the Bay Area have those identical devices

Yeap. It's a toll tag RFID transceiver for vehicles with windshield that's blocks RF signals mostly high end Euro luxury. cars.

Makes sense why I only saw it on higher end vehicles, mostly Model S

I remember getting one of these from E-ZPass in NY because I had factory windshield that caused interference.

Surprised they are still around because the modern window transponders don't have the reading issues. In Texas they usually use a sticker version for Toll Tag. Surprised to see this on a Texas registered car.

These days a standard TxTag is just a small decal with an RFID chip embedded in the middle, maybe 6cm by 2cm at the most.
