When the Atlantic City Expressway open in 1964 the speed limit was 70MPH until the Arab oil embargo and Nixon lowered the national speed limit to 55MPH.

Should be 75Mph (at least), you can get run off the road if you drive slower. A lot of times from NJ up to Albany I cruise with the flow of traffic at 85 and you are not passing a lot of people going less than 75. Most traffic is moving about 80 as the article indicates.

I drove 55 mph on northern part of the NJTP to explain to my mother that driving the speed limit is dangerous turns out NO one drives at that speed

Atlantic City Expressway is patrolled by the NJ State Police all Ka Band.
Its not all Ka band. I’ve been hit with X band multiple times.

A study by N.J.com, based on the "85 Percentile Rule", revealed that major highways in the Garden State should have higher speed limits. In some cases as high as 80 MPH.
www.nj.com: Are the speed limits a joke? A radar gun and some math found the answer
The new rule is maximize revenue. Then they have the audacity to tell you the ticket is for your safety! If they want me to believe that then instead of fines being essentially another revenue stream rebate all fines to taxpayers so the political class doesn’t benefit from our pain. That’ll never happen!

New Jersey finally has a study worth paying for, only problem is it would cut into the overly greedy State's revenue and they can't have that. They live in the dark ages up there and you can't even pump your own gas! I was running late to catch my flight and the rental car needed topped off before returning so I found an empty pump and grabbed the handle to fill up and a hockey game almost broke out (you know a fight). I hate EWR! And why in the world is the messed up NY Port Authority doing running a New Jersey airport??!!!!!!! Sorry, really needed to get that out.

Mass Pike...75 seems like the average speed. But the thinking is: 'if we post 75, they'll be driving 85.." (legal speed today is 65 in most sections) I drive the full length of I-90 a lot (in MA) and there really aren't a lot of cops writing tickets.

Just buy a diesel, and goto the truck pumps. No one pumps for trucks, even in NJ :)

The evidence is clear that speed limits in NJ need to be lowered! The state needs money and drivers are saps who have may be unhappy will pay extortion by LEO. The budget could be balanced by a speed limit on the NJ Turnpike of 25 MPH.

I think it would be a cool experiment to see how fast people would drive if the speed limit would be lowered. Would the new 85 percentile be just 10 mph above the new PSL?

Convert to metric : 80 mph = 128.7475 kph ...
in France the psl on highway is 130 kph ...
well nothing is perfect , they have other issues .

Safety is so much more than a number on radar/laser screen.

I think as you get to 80, many people wouldn't drive much faster. Many of these interstates could easily be set to 80 without any negative consequences.

On the turnpike pretty much everyone is at 75-90. 75 psl sounds good but good luck getting that

As they like to say, "Back in the good old days when I started driving . . . . ". The Posted Interstate Speed Limit was 75 MPH except in the States that had no PSL on the Interstate! It was a huge bummer when President Ford lowered them to 55 MPH!

I think the I-95 in Jersey should at least be 75 or higher. This past weekend on my way from Bronx to Edison I was literally cruising at 90 MPH. The road is too straight.
