Last night i took an alternative route heading to upstate ny bc of the heavy rain and flooding. So i took the hutch to 684 then to 84. (Rather than the taconic to 84)

Switching from 684 to 84, right before the exit, i ran into an leo in the median facing perpendicular to traffic running 34.7 right on a slight bend. see the pic below for the location.

First off: i physically saw the leo before i got an alert. this caused me to panic a bit b/c my R1 usually gives me over mile long alerts on 34.7 (it did a couple times before this encounter so i know it was working correctly).

Once i saw the leo i adjusted my speed to between 55-60 in a 55, then i get an alert from my R1, a very low alert so i figured he was either shooting i/o but the alert didnt ramp up and down at all and he was pretty close visually so i figured i got poor detection and he was actually running c/o. Maybe i got bad range b/c the leo was perpendicular to the road. or maybe when he saw me brake he turned on his radar c/o.

Either way i passed him at legal speeds and then i see him pull out after the car behind me passed him. my instincts told me he profiled my car and was coming after me. so i unplugged my R1 and continued to drive within the limits.

So i exited, he remained behind the other car for a while, i felt like he was waiting for my to make a mistake. now im on 84 going west and he gets behind me and im on cruise control at 57 in a 55. at this point he realizes im not going to **** up so he can pull me over.

he then switches lanes back into the left lane to pass me. When his car was about halfway past mine i saw his lights go off and he slowed down and slid behind me. i was like WTF and immediately pulled over.

2 leos come to my car, and like two cops from the movie training day and they lightly questioned me. the reason they told me they pulled me over was because of my tints. it was 1130pm at night, pitch black in the dark. I felt stalked and hunted. the leo who was conducting the stop even had a hard time saying it.

anyway ultimately they were nice to me and let me go but damn was that scary. i was wondering if it was fake leo at first bc they didnt have me on anything else. but pulling me over for tints at night by NYSP? fml they don’t need a reason anymore i see. I expect this kinda **** from city cops not troopers, fml. be careful out there guys!

They were mostly looking for Drugs, drinking. They have to have a reason for pulling you over to question you.

They're supposed to have reason for pulling you over. ;)

Pretext for stop.................any minor equip violation (rear LP lights are a common one). That said, tint will get you pulled over constantly here in the Hudson Valley, both by NYSP and locals. Not worth the constant hassels, IMO.

Trooper law states that when you get pulled over, you're getting a ticket. Not sure why they didn't ticket you but you're lucky.

Ever since NYPD pulled me over for my tints, I removed them from my crappy honda. They were purple and from the previous owner..plus the car is almost 20 years old now.

anyway, that area, has a ton of NYSP there. He wasn't using radar to pull you over, just looking for equipment violations, and such

im not removing my tints, this is the 4th time i have been pulled over for it.
3 city cops and now this. the city cops like it so they can pull me over at their will, however, i tend to avoid it by keeping my windows rolled down.

i cant take the sunlight and added heat from it. i also get migraines from the brightness.

i need to go to an eye doctor and get something that allows me to keep them, then bring that to the dmv to get permission. i faintly remember someone telling me i can do this.

What percentage tint do you have and what is allowed in your area?

70% VLT is the minimum you can have. Now what windows can be tinted depends on if the vehicle is a passenger car or MPV.

    NY state law:
so i have to let in 70% of the light so i can legally only have very light tints. (On the front and rear windows)

my tints in the back only let in 10% (5% is limo i think) and the fronts are 20%. my car is all black with black interior. my sunroof is about 10% and thats from the dealer :)

so i can get an exemption, i need to make an appointment:

TeamQuack you said it yourself. He said they pulled you over for tinted windows. You have been pulled over before for the same thing. Call me crazy but I’ll bet a buffalo nickel you will again. You said they were nice and respectful. Imagine that. More bad things happen at night. Cops know that. They weren’t “stalking” you. They were enforcing the laws of your state (which are stupid laws IMO). We don’t have CM’s yet to hide illegally tinted windows. Until we do I expect you should either remove yours or be prepared to be pulled over again. Or move to Florida. We can have tinted windows here.

In southern states you can play games when tint laws are reasonable but not overly dark (like 35%) all around

You tint the back window @35% the back windows black out and front windows 25-28%

15% is too dark for front windows 20% is too dark even in 35% states but Is doable
25% is just right. In the right light conditions it will have them 2nd guessing

In states like NY where 70% is required on fronts cops know any darkness is illegal and is an automatic probable cause stop

Because essentially any darkness is not allowed on front windows
You're only option is a medical pass

But dont go so far with your medical diagnosis that it could potentially affect your driver's license and privileges all together

Check out this story which fortunately people not the Nazi govt is winning

Even IF you manage to persuade DMV to grant you a written waiver, you'll still get pulled over every time you pass a bored or gung-ho LEO who's out fishing. The waiver (which DMV in NY is notorious for resisting issuing) will only prevent you being cited after you've been pulled over (& the LEO gets a looky loo to see if there's any other reason to *investigate further*)

I'm not disputing your (IMO) legitimate (i.e., it's not just an excuse for aesthetics) situation, but just pointing out the reality of what you need to expect. Best of luck whatever you decide.

i totally agree with you, im just pissed off bc i have had tints on my cars for years but this car i have or maybe updated enforcement procedures has literally been all the reasons for my leo encounters for the past year.

i felt stalked bc they totally were watching me for a few miles thinking i had something to hide since they def saw me brake which i shouldn’t have. i only did bc of the surprise visual alert i had.

Many times that I have been pulled over they followed me for awhile first. I don’t know why they do that. Perhaps to look for drunk driving. IDK.

They run the plate to see if stolen or owner has warrants. Helps them to know what to expect on a stop.

I know personally of people pulled over where the NYSP had already pulled drivers license record for registered owner (after a bit of shadowing)

No way he could see anything about your tint level in darkness as you drove past him. Perhaps it was your rear window decal?
    upload_2018-7-29_16-38-20.jpeg
BTW — Florida does enforce limits on tint supposedly so the cop can see the gun before the flash. I believe the back side windows can be darker.

I don’t know why but for whatever reason I always thought that was illegal. I thought they had to have probable cause to call your license plate in.
