Gwinnett County is loving their new Dragon Eye Lidar Units. Their new tactic is to find a disabled vehicle on the shoulder, pull up behind it making sure they are farther right off the shoulder so on coming traffic can see the vehicle in front, then turn on the Blues making it look like they have someone pulled over. Then stand on the passenger side of their patrol car using the DE on oncoming traffic!

Got hit with Lidar cresting the hill on PIB this morning by that officer. Lucky there was a Dodge Challenge and Mustang Shelby playing in the two far left lanes because I was PSL +15 in the Tbird having let up just before cresting. I had floored it coming up the on ramp as I usually do not seeing the Shelby behind me. He must of thought I was wanting to play. I heard the roar behind me when both the Shelby and Challenger also floored it. Since I was inside on the right I ducked off the exit right before reaching him and he didn't come after me. I'll just have to wonder if he went after either of them but they had to have been 25 over. I marked him on Waze just in case he didn't go after them or if he might come back.

Two weekends in a row on PIB, looks like no more straight line fun on Sunday mornings anymore!

I dont get it. Why create a traffic hazard to catch speeders? More cops get killed by motorist hitting them on the side of the road than by gunfire every year.
Hell here they just get off the road somewhere and shoot Ka....write as many tickets as they can write as fast as they can. No reason for "tactics"......

Probably why they have been told to have the Blues going and be standing on the passenger side of their vehicle when shooting. That way they are as far off the roadway as possible with the police cruiser between them and the right of way. The officer was standing in the grass completely off the shoulder.

Don't get me wrong....I am not doubting your story. Just I know many a Commander/Trainers and am amazed anyone would authorize such a situation. Problem is not the officer getting hit it is the vehicles on the shoulder getting hit and pushed into folks "standing in the grass"....for what? A traffic citation? You going to subject/expose your personnel and equipment to damage and liability for a traffic ticket?

Sometimes I feel like when a department gets new toys, especially lidar, they start getting too smart for their own good.

The tactic described here is definitely dangerous to the officer.

This is normal here in Calgary. They will pop their trunk and act like they're caution taping off/tow tagging the vehicle but are actually shooting lidar. What was the speed where the LEO was shooting cars? Fastest I've ever seen was in a 60 mph zone. It's a death wish for the cop IMO

Oh I see exactly what you are saying and Officer safety is paramount with today's distracted driver. And of course I could see this idea as just being this Officer or a few Officer's idea. But to be clear, for the Officer to be hit with this setup somebody would have to hit a parked Police Vehicle with the Blue Lights on or drive off the road, off the shoulder, and down the side of a police vehicle with the Blues On. With some of the police cam videos I have seen, I would have to say it isn't impossible for the Officer to get hit but I would think it would be safer then sitting on the shoulder sideways to traffic with no lights on. Which makes me think of other speeding traps in other states, is it Baltimore where the police are required by law to publish a list of where they will be doing radar/lidar enforcement in the paper the day before?

So to be clear, the setup was as follows:
Disabled vehicle on the shoulder ahead on the side one is driving on. Police vehicle pulled up behind disabled vehicle offset farther off the shoulder slightly into the grass so drivers coming upon the scene can see the vehicle in front of the cruiser. Cruiser has Blues going like he has pulled the car in front over so people already think he has a customer and don't slow down like they should. Officer is standing outside of cruiser on passenger side in the grass using Lidar on traffic coming up to his little made up scene.

Posted is 55 MPH but it is three lanes wide on both sides with a concrete median wall with on ramps and off ramps with no traffic lights so to many people treat it like Interstate.

No not yet, but if the TMG (Name to be determined) Platinum System ends up at the price I think it will, I can buy a really nice dash cam with the money left over from not buying a 6 head ALP system!

Recommendations? I think I have seen some dash cam video with current speed and other details at the bottom. I can think of three ways to get that info their, edit the video (doubt this one is it), have the webcam BT tethered to the webcam, or webcam has its own GPS. Is one way better then another? I have done zero research on a dash cam as I have always thought why give them video evidence. Guess I should check out the Dash Cam section of the Forum.

I would just get a VIOFO A119 with the GPS Should be about $85-$100 and it's 1440p. It record sound and displays speed in the video (you can turn those options on or off). You can hardwire or stick it into a cigarette outlet.

In my opinion you can't really beat it for the price. I've got an A119 and an A119Pro.

Have a look at the dash cam section. Lots of us run the Viofo A119V2’s.

    Pretty good option for $100.00

It's that "gotcha!" mentality taking over! Yes, even at the expense of officer safety. I remember seeing a video on a Canadian highway where the cops actually step out into the freeway in front of speeders directing them to pull over.

I have seen local PDs here sitting on the left shoulder in the dark, all blacked out, just inches from the high speed lane running I/O. Gotcha!

I've been really happy with my Thinkware F800. A dual cam F800 Pro can be had for $450 or less.

I would say if the cop is clearly in view and someone gets caught in that trap they deserve it. I’m not one of those who slams on their brakes when a police car is on the side but if someone speeds by at 20 over while a cop with lights going is clearly sitting there then....

That is a common tactic used for "move over law" sting operations.

Yes I’ve seen those too. And amazed at the people who don’t get over who have plenty of room to do so...

Cause it's a game hunting the dangerous speeders , just exchange the machine gun for a laser ...same spirit ...same goal : make a kill.

I mentioned in another post about being flagged for speeding on Highway 1, west of Banff. Three busy lanes of traffic at 55 mph and the LEO walked right over to the #3 lane to direct me over to the left median! Incredible!

There is a relatively new law out in Alberta that drivers must slow to about 40 MPH whenever passing an emergency vehicle (firetruck, tow truck, amby or LEO) with lights activated for obvious reasons.
