Has anybody noticed any effects to RD in this summer heat while leaving it in vehicle. Has to be at least 140 degrees or better closed up in vehicles setting out in sun.

I spoke to a tech at Valentine once and he said they bake them in an oven during testing and said typical auto heat didn’t hurt it.

My R1 stays on the windshield (up high behind a tint strip) while I'm parked in Whitehall. It's been working fine. When I can, I try to pull in or back in to put my back to the sun.

I leave mine up,however I have it mounted up high and I put the sunshade up when I park and that keeps it shaded. If I leave it in the direct sun it will not always power up right away as it's over temp. With the sunshade though it's not bad. So just keep it out of direct sun or toss it in the glove box or consol

No wonder they smell like Grandma’s house.

I'm with TheBravo, just slide it off the mount and put it in the glovebox or side pocket out of the sun. Most all of them can take the 140 inside temperature, but when I was out west, being in a 140 degree car plus the sun beating down directly on it heating it even high can be an issue. Getting it out of direct sunlight is the key.

But what they didn't do was bake them in an oven for 6mos straight
Then another 6mos in a 25° freezer
Day in and Day out

Heat kills any electronics long term
Even if it can operate under those conditions

I haven't had issues with my V1s due to heat or cold, EVER. I use a windshield mount at the dash.

I've had V1s since the 1990s, too. (Yeah, I have had them updated occasionally, so its not the exact same unit...)

I have seen huge variation in RD performance but I can't say what percentage is weather caused and what device affected by heat. The only thing I can tell is that extreme Greek heat destroys RD performance. Take a look at the following video from last year. First and third cam the same with different temperatures (35 vs 22 degree Celsius) and different time of the day (noon vs morning).

Of course long term heat exposure affects performance and can even destroy a RD, but the immediate results are more than obvious even though I think it's more an environmental thing rather than immediate drop in performance.

I agree with you on the long term. I was very struck when he explained how they would heat them up at absurd temps for hours and test them. I was in the middle of trying to figure out why my V1 suddenly sucked and it ended up being the stupid BMW windshield. I routinely had mine sitting in +40 (for you greeks!) conditions and really thought that was what did it but bench testing said otherwise. I’m not sure if the magnesium case had anything to do with the resilience. Now my net radar sits outside blasting furnace heat blowing on it and it still works.

I leave my r1 up high on the windshield behind the tint strip in Texas heat. If I'm parking for a long time especially outside though I throw it in the glove box. Never noticed issues with the heat.

Have yet to have a problem leaving the v1 in the heat. Now cheap rds (like cobras) Ive had in the past used to always act up in the heat. But with it being so easy to slide off the mount with it staying on the windshield really no reason not to stash in the glovebox or somewhere definitely won't hurt it!

Valentine's magnesium case gives me alot more confidence than lessor plastic cases. Unfortunately, the suction cups cannot deal with it as well.

I do all that also, and I always crack the windows at least a little bit. That makes a BIG difference.

Those V1 suction cups are the worst! High heat, cold weather, and everything in between. Or maybe it's just me.

Maybe MV will switch to Silicone or somebody will market V1 compatible Silicone suction cups. I’m sure many of us would be interested. I’ve considered attaching a loop of monofilament between the RD and the RVM as a safety.
