I had a Valentine One from 1992 until 2009 (stolen)

Most recently a friend let me use his Escort Max 360 and I was really not happy with it. Big! Cheap quality. And two of the arrows went dark

Today I went into a Best Buy and to my amazement they had a Uniden R3. Only one.

After reading the nearly universal praise for it I bought it

I opened it and set up in the parking lot.

Kinda cheap build quality. :(

The mount was kinda shoddy pointed the unit up on the air at an angle. Couldn’t fix it at all

Turn it on. Immediately a false K band alert from the store itself

Drove home for 30 minutes . Had 5 K Band alerts (live in Los Angeles). No cops

Should I get a refund or keep it for the two weeks I get?

What frequency were the falses?

I honestly don’t remember. I just know they don’t do K band out here much at all it’s mostly laser and KA.

I’ve had a V1 from 1993 to now. The R3 blows it away. I was testing yesterday and I’m getting double the range of the V1. It’s much quieter around town once setup correctly.

You’ve had it for 60 minutes and it’s not even set up properly. Give it a chance. Read up, get it programmed properly.

You have to get it set up right to quiet down the K falses. What is your set up right now pertaining to K band? Also, I believe you may be able to turn K off in California. Maybe someone else with more knowledge of that area can chime in on that one.

How should I set it up?
You need to set your quiet ride at around 30 mph.
I run K band at 40% (still gives plenty of detection range in all but tough terrain)
K filter on
TSF on

Start there and see what you get.

Also check out Vortex guide on how to set up the R3

Definitely keep it for a while. Most stores will false K band on most detectors (if not all). Lock them out, that's the beauty of the R3 vs the R1. Low Speed muting helps with that too.
Which mount are you using? I found the suction cup one to be pretty bad. Tilts up for me. Use the suction mount cup and play with it a bit. It took me a bit to find the right angle for my windshield.
If you are absolutely sure there is no k band period (rarely the case, or if you think the risk is minimal), turn it off.
See if turning TSR on helps. My detector was noisy for a bit until I learned what it falses to and getting settings right. If you get a false of 24.200 +/- 10 look for Hondas, Acuras, and the Pacifica. GM vehicles are also a source of falses. I think I typically get 24.149ish. Don't quote me on it though.
Also, update the firmware. I did it quickly as soon as I got it but I remember the beginning being noisy.
The R3 has a track record of laser falses. If you are getting them, turn it off. It's not very helpful in the first place since there is no early warning and just serves as a notification saying you're screwed.
You may want to try the blend mount if you don't like the mounts in the box.
Oh yah, and make sure the update cable you use supports data transfer. Otherwise, it can't communicate with the computer to update.

Most people go 70%K band but if it's encountered less 40% could be okay.
I run K wide, 100%, tsr on, quiet ride 35mph. Once I learned the false sources, it became instinct and takes me a second or two to identify it.

I personally would give it more time. The V1 was my primary detector for 23 or 24 years until my most recent V1 was stolen over a year ago. I have owned my R3 for about 8 months, and I have been very pleased with its sensitivity and resistance to false alarms. I find the R3 BSM filtering is on par with the V1, and the R3 is more sensitive. If you use your detector a lot in the city, you can adjust the sensitivity levels or disable X or K if you don’t encounter those frequencies in CA. I normally run my R3 in Highway mode in the city because my local police use both K and Ka. I disabled X band because it is no longer used in my area. When I do use the Advanced mode, I dial the K-band sensitivity back to 60%, and it makes urban driving quieter. Also, you can lock out stationary k-band false locations if you want. The R3 is a highly versatile detector. I would experiment with the settings and give it a least a week or ten days, and return it if you don’t like it.

Only 60 minutes in and a few K band falses when it's not set up correctly yet? You know the R3 has GPS lockouts, right? That would solve the first false you got in the Best Buy parking lot. JUST......

Nothing or get V1 again. I know it’s old but it feels more substantial. I hate the cheapness feel/quality of the Uniden. Feels like a $150 detector that costs $400
The ONLY reason the R3 feels "cheap" is because its light weight. Everything functions fine on it and build quality is more than adequate.

What it lacks in form it obliterates in function. There is a reason why it's rated the way it is. I'd prefer to pay less for something that works well over something that perfoms similarly but costs more due to form factor. There is a reason you only found one at best buy. They are usually sold out or in the back of stock because it's not on the shelf yet. Escort has many detectors collecting dust.

so it's been '09 since you ran a v1? today the v1 will be nosier than the r3 for sure. i can understand the attraction to v1.

to get a v1 close to r3 features you will have to buy and piggy back several not so attractive and cheap looking boxes along with a phone.

Uniden has packed a bunch of features in a small and light weight box. and not to mention the r3 range will blow the doors off a v1.
