I chased the signal for about 17 minutes and I couldn't find him/her. Talk about where's Waldo?

I feel like my R1 is not performing as well recently (since the weather got hot). I left it cooking in my car for a while (never take it down). I wonder if that had any impact on it’s range. I going to send it back in soon for a check up.

I would personally recommend that you take it down when not in use and run the air or a/c on when running it, Seems to help alot.

lol yea probably, thats what im thinking too. Funny enough exactly that happened to me this morning except was in front of me and was trying to figure out where it was coming from for like a mile ish and through 2 lights. C/O 34.7 im thinking from a front mounted unit as the signal would sorta come in and out.

I feel like that is unacceptable on the part of the RD engineering for a price tag of $400 if it wont properly work in average car temps in the summer. Now I would excuse places like AZ and such but V1s dont seem to have this issue.

I agree and disagree.

I would imagine that a dsp is using alot more processing power over normal methods which would cause alot more heat plus being a small unit compared to say the v1 which is a monster which probably gets better heat displacement. I could be surly wrong I'm not no master of radar detector.

Oh yeah, I understand that might be the current reality, but I mean it shouldn't be, if its the case. I would rather have a larger case for a RD and it be 100% reliable under hot conditions than it be small and not.

my v1 spoiled me, i never ever took it down and it has always worked stellar in all weather conditions. My R1 was so killer when i got it back from uniden.

i hate taking it down and putting it up. Thats how i end up scratching the lens, smh.

LOL, we are talking about a device that was designed to be placed on your window in the direct sun and when remain their when you park. If it wasn't then shame on the engineers involved.

It looks like the Uniden R3 can handle hotter temperatures than the V1, but both should be fine. That being said, take it down if you mount it in the center of the windshield or the dashboard to avoid heat-related issues.

Keep in mind interior air temp will be much lower than anything in direct sunlight. The surface of a black plastic case in direct sunlight will be much higher than the interior air temp.

I don't think it should be necessary to run the AC directly on your RD as long as the vehicle cabin is at a reasonably cool temp, in the 60s or 70s F. OTOH, I don't recommend leaving it on the windshield in a parked car in the hot summer sun. If I leave my Magnum on the windshield when parked on a hot summer day, it totally loses K band detection. The K band detection will return once it cools off. The Redline doesn't seem to have that issue, and it just seems to run hot (literally and detection wise) all the time. My V1 totally failed on 33.8 during a test event after I had left it on the windshield while it was parked. The sun came out unexpectedly and it heated up fast. I wound up sending it in for an upgrade. My older V1 (hardware version 1.7) did not have that problem. I think that something changed after VR added the temperature compensation circuit.

My point is that you are asking for an unexpected loss of detection of you leave your RD on the windshield in the hot summer sun while it's parked. I would not take a chance on it.

My V1 reminds me of an army tank! I got it in 2010 [3.872] and it's NEVER let me down! It's never been back for any problems or repairs, and it still works as good as new!

I guess because I live here on the surface of the sun.......
We all have some form of windshield shade. We always put it up and crack the windows about a 1/2" to 1".
Drops the temps inside the car significantly.
As for protecting your CM investment. Mount it high or under your RVM.

OH, BUT they do. ER products will get a Service Required message and V1s will have to be sent in if they overheat to the point of inoperability. Its been tested extensively in Australia.

All that unbridled power (range) without directional information is why I haven't yet purchased a Uniden 'R' product. If Uniden can get some decent functioning directional indicators on these units I'll give one a try. Until then my preference remains with a 'lower horsepower, more controllable' unit.
[This is not a V1 vs. R post. It's a post about the importance of complimenting range with some idea of where the F the signal is originating from.]

I've had mine for over a year practically sitting on the dash. I'm well into my second broiling summer and I am having no heat related issues with range. This thing could find 34.7 if it was underwater. Lol.

Right now I am in my prius and it has a solar panel which turns on the fans in the sun which keeps the temperature the same as it is outside, wish this was a feature in my other vehicles as I think it is good to get in to a warm car instead of an oven.
