I'm going to Iceland at the end of the summer which I'm super excited about since it's an absolutely stunning country:
    download.jpg godafoss-iceland-1800x1000_0.jpg iceland (1).jpg ICELAND.jpg
It's a $310 nonstop flight there and back which is just too good not to take. I'll be doing the Golden Circle and Ring Road, so if anybody's been there I'd appreciate recommendations and tips.

I definitely don't want to let this distract from the vacation, but the speed limits and fines are absolutely revolting. The highest speed limit is 90 km/h or 56 mph and the roads look like this:
    Iceland.PNG
As far as I can tell, the fine for 11 km/h (6.8 mph) over on that road is nearly $500 (for 6.8 over). I already asked in international, but since nobody probably reads that does anybody know anything about frequencies or speed camera locations? This Escort thread is the only thing I can find. I downloaded a speed camera app and as far as I can tell the speed cameras are mostly on the populated west coast and all have a sign 200m in advance (is that outside the kill zone?)

I don't plan of speeding too much because by the looks of it you'll be publicly beheaded for what I would usually drive on a road like that out west, but I'm kind of worried I'll accidentally go 11 km/h over and double the price of my vacation. I'm probably just being paranoid though since there isn't much enforcement in the middle of nowhere, I'll have a speed camera app, my R1, and all speed cameras are marked. It also won't affect my license or insurance.

Despite that, Iceland still looks like an amazing country with landscape almost like another planet and I can't wait to see it.

So jealous; the aurora and the gorgeous skies as well as the natural landscape is somewhat I dream of capturing (I used to do astrophotography). Enjoy :D

My niece just got back from there and she said it was incredible. She said the cities (city?) is a bit packed, but once you get 15 minutes outside of town it's like you're in the middle of nowhere. The whole country has only 350K people.

She's pretty much talked me into going someday, so please update the thread when you get back. Have fun!

When I was hanging out for a connecting flight at Ft Lauderdale FL airport last year, i heard the calls to so and so gate for Iceland. I was headin the opposite direction to the tropics, and I thought “Iceland?” Who the hell would want to go there. A co-worker has been twice so I got educated. I hear it’s a “cool” place to visit. Have fun

They named it Iceland to discourage people coming there...just as they named Greenland that to get people to come there.
It is a great place. People are great. You will starve to death. They eat the nastiest **** on the planet.

Interested to hear how it is. My city also started the $300 RT, direct, route on duct tape airlines.

St. Louis. It's on WOW Airlines which means they'll probably charge you for water and the service will probably be about as good as McDonald's, but I'll just make sure my bag is not one millimeter too big and sleep the whole way. It's a plane that flies across the ocean and they seem to have a 90% on time rate.

I really hope it's tolerable since it would be awesome to be able to get to Europe for <$600 and one stop.

Unfortunately, it will be light out the whole time so the Aurora Borealis is out of the question (maybe, just maybe it'll happen at like 2am). On the bright side that means more time to explore the landscape without worrying about it getting dark.

Now I'm really interested. That's where I'd fly out of also.

Here are the some airline reviews on TripAdvisor:

    WOW: 3/5
    United 3/5
    Delta: 4/5
    Southwest: 4.5/5
    Frontier: 2.5/5
    American: 3.5/5

Airlines apparently aren't the most liked businesses. I can see why since this year I've flown twice round trip and got delayed 4 hours both times (which both ruined a night of sleep).

I'm not expecting too much from WOW, but they're the same as United. I don't have much to lose since I won't have a $3,000 bag and It's not a big deal if I'm delayed.

I went in Feb 2017. Loved it. Absolutely beautiful geologically speaking. Did the Golden Circle and the waterfall tours. If I remember correctly it was the Golden Circle tour where you come to a national park and you actually have to pay to use the bathroom there. You will miss out on the the Northern Lights, I think they are visible between Oct-March. I got to see them and it was incredible.

Food and drink is rather pricey. They love their lamb and fish. We tired horse, puffin, kangaroo and whale. The puffin was nasty. lol

We flew WOW. It wasn't the greatest but it wasn't too bad. When you return home, you check your own bags at the airport. You weigh them, tag them and send them on the belt. That was a first for me.

We did the geothermal pool the first night we arrived. We left out of Newark, NJ and the flight was at 6pm. It was a 5 hour flight and when you get there it's a 5 hour time difference. So it's 4am. We couldnt check in until 2pm! So that first day is a killer. We were up for 34 hours before we crashed in our beds. I remember my daughter putting her head down and falling asleep at the restaurant we tried those meats I mentioned.

When we went it was the least amount of snowfall on record for a winter. A co-worker went this past winter and most of the tours were cancelled with all the snow.

I'm so glad we did it. Those black sand beaches were awesome.

I'm going in a little less than a month. The prices seem to randomly vary, but looking at Google flights August 20th - 27th is $280. My flight went up by a lot in the past couple weeks, but there are still plenty of cheap ones.

I'm curious about Reykjavik; I won't be there for long, but it'd be cool to see what the bars are like. I also hear the have a penis museum...
