It has been discussed (and proven) that mounting remote RD antennas behind grills significantly reduces their detection range. Now when I see the latest Volvo V90 police cars and where they have radar antennas mounted behind grill, will this sort of mount give more advantage to RD say in I/O cases? Or will this perhaps in no way affect the speed measuring...

I feel like it would freak the gun out that it’s getting readings of normal and of 0 feet from the grill. But I’m sure it works well enough. I don’t think I know anyone who sets up detectors and tests out guns. Might be interesting to try. Isnt Volvo also a luxury brand?

Are you sure that's the antenna in the grill and not just the siren/horn?

That may be the radar antenna on the passenger side mirror. I’ve noticed some of the radar antenna offerings are square in nature for K-band.

Oh yeah, I thought it was confirmed or an article or something that this was radar on the grill. That definitely looks like the bull horn

It sure is the radar antenna in that grill. Here its Ka-band. Compare the shape of the radar antenna on that motorbike vs. the one in the grill. Also try to find it on passenger side...clearly not mirror mounted nor windshield.

Obviously they are paying way too many taxes in Sweden if the local PD's are driving V90's. They start around $60K and can easily go over $70K with options like All Wheel Drive.

I often point to this when people tell me that high taxes and socialism is good. It's ridiuculous to me when police cars in the UK are BMWs/Volvos and the like.

What a colossal waste of money. Sorry, OT, I know, but I couldn't resist.

You know in Europe those brands aren’t all just luxury cars, right?

They replace police vehicles here every 6 years or 160,000km.

The current choice is the Ford Explorer, Interceptor edition, which is around $65,000 each plus mods.

Picking other brands isn't going to give a cheaper vehicle for police purposes.

Then again we also have 2 policy helicopters, for a city size less than 1million.

    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I don't know many things about Sweden, but I believe they all follow EU type of speed enforcement which means following the vehicle and then measuring, or using ambush techniques to photo the back of the car etc. By using this kind of tactics they don't need long range radars. It's sufficient to tag vehicles closer than 100m (about 300ft). Some Gatso equipped cars have the radar and flash behind the licence plate that is retracted to measure and photo and then comes back into it's place. All these with digital Gatso cams that already exist in Greece and many other countries in EU.

Here is a closeup of the grill from this video:

    Clearly a siren/horn:

Edit: At 12:30 in the video he says it's a siren.
