These damn dash cams are nearly worthless lately

I format my Blackvue card every month with the button on the side. Ill get an occasional late start up but its been fine for 4 years now. I love how it provides verbal warnings.

People wonder why quality automotive electronics (especially OEM) cost more than whatever junk they can get off Alibaba.

I’ve gotten tired of wasting money on these cams. I’m now using an old GoPro 3 and deal with manually turning it on/off every ride and manually deleting the videos before the card gets full. It’s a hassle for sure but the video quality is great and I’ve not had an overheat issue yet. I set it to one button record which works well enough. I’ve formed a habit to turn it on and off every ride so it’s not as bad as it sounds. I’m surprised GoPro or some other entity hasn’t modified the firmware to enable more dash cam like settings like loop recording for example. The real perk to the GoPros are the mounts; I have mine on a ball mount so I can pivot the direction of the cam if need be.

So I did a quick search on my thought about firmware mods for GoPros and found this on Reddit:

    www.reddit.com: r/gopro - GoPro Hacking FAQ

If I’m reading this right, the Hero 3 can be modded for loop recording. There are many non permanent changes that can be made to these GoPros.

Unfortunately most of these dedicated dashcams have pretty crappy build quality, regardless of the brand name... Only thing you can do is try buying these from a place which offers the longest warranty and responsive customer support.

B.t.w, I'm still surprised the GoPro haven't released a dedicated dashcam - they could make a huge amount of $$$ if it would be even slightly more reliable than all the junk by Asian brands...

Street Guardian has held up very well through multiple south Texas summers.

I think what's needed is a dashcam made by a reputable company that only puts the cameras on the windshield. The recorder, memory, and main body should be located somewhere out of the way, like under the dash or mounted somewhere out of direct sunlight.

Those exist and new remote systems like that are being introduced regularly. Street Guardian is working on a new one due to be available fairly soon, definitely this year. I myself am holding off on a new purchase until it becomes available so I can see if it’s what I want.

I guess they are all battery-based cameras, or else, they will drain your battery out!

My Street Guardian has also worked flawlessly in the Alabama heat. I've had it a little over 2 years.

Well, the reformatted SD card has done the trick for over a week now. I guess I'll need to reformat them weekly. I'll add that to Sunday mornings ground check.

Well they can but the 35mm lens kind of takes a few inches of space and the price tag of $300 might deter some. :)
