Took a road trip today only to find in the first hour I wanted to turn off the V1. I also wanted to scream a lot. I was starting to think there was something wrong with the detector. After about five or six miles I had gotten as many in your face full powered hits with steady ramp ups. I'm like what the hell is going on, no police units, wide open road, no over passes where is this radar coming from? Thank Goodness for Arrows or I probably wouldn't have picked up on it so quickly. With a R3's sensitivity that would have been real nightmare. It would have never shut up for 40-50 miles of driving, plus you'd never have known where it was coming from
FYI PA. State Police must be stationary when using radar, no rolling radar in PA.

Then I caught on to what they had done. Every mile or close to it, the PA SP had attached a K band radar unit to a metal pole just at the top of the guide rail along the shoulder. This of course was connected to a battery box.

This gimik ran from the I-79/I-76 split north to the 104 mile marker. Then I got on I-80 east from I-79 and they had pulled the same stunt out to around the 52 mile marker heading east. IMG_20180528_093101.jpg

The radar unit although a little tough to see is on that pole to the left of the mile marker about half way.
up. If you click on the image then go to open in new window and click on the image for full size you can get a good view of the unit.

Was this solely for annoying detector users or enforcement?

Thats more annoying than fake Waze reports all down the road. That’s such a d**ck move but I can’t help but be a little impressed by the creativity.

The thing is where this was happening the speed limit is 70 mph. I'm thinking it was being used to annoy the radar detector users.

I had the cruise set at 65 mph and most people were pacing me or crawling past me at 66-70 mph. Very few and I mean a handful of people were probably running between 70-75 mph. With gas prices up, speeds seem to be running at slightly below the limit. All the big trucks were running at a max of 65 mph.

That doesn’t look like a normal mobile or handheld radar unit? Is that some type of mobile traffic sensing unit instead?

Using radar that way be in violation of FCC regulations. If I were a PA resident I would contact them.

Are you in Custom/Euro mode or Factory mode?
If in Custom mode, hold down the volume knob to switch from C to c and that turns off K-band. That's what I do for prolonged K-band signals.

He's in PA where all they use is K band. He could just power down the unit in that case.

Surprised those things aren't cut off and smashed. 90% chance that would stop them, since odds are they're not going to put up tamper proof cams.

You keep thinking that it will stop and a quarter mile later it would start up again. It did stop eventually but it was very annoying.

    Running JBV1 Custom sweeps.

Maybe they are collecting data due to the speed limit being raised

First step finding out who the mfg is then FW updates on Detectors
Someone said something was happening in Colorado (?). If this is a new strategy and they deem it as effective, it will spread. Countermeasures will be needed.

What frequency were they on? Might help identify the stuff being discarded.

I’m pretty sure this is how we all get microwaved to death, even if it is legal surely they could have come up with a better way to do this... they probably just had a use it or lose it budget issue and found something to do with our money. Would an extremely narrow segmentation work or does the PD happen to use the exact frequency of the signs? If they did that here I’d just start burning my 200 lockouts

Sorry I got here late. I have seen them used in certain areas where deer crashes are common and other collisions occur the most, where death or serious injuries are happening. The nice part, if those are common areas for troopers than, they just outwitted themselves with thier own device.
