FINALLY! I can actually use my in-dash screen for something. This is huge for me, I have an iPhone X and Waze presents a concern for OLED burn-in using it as long as I do. I was jailbroken on my old iPhone 6 and previously used the tweak “NGXPlay” to mirror Waze onto my Apple CarPlay display, but it was buggy and I always wished for native integration. Hopefully this is going to roll out across the board for generic CarPlay and Android Auto receivers!

I’ll provide updates starting tomorrow when I’ll use the new functionality on my way to work.

Same here, I've been toying with the idea of upgrading now after seeing this

Apparently my car doesn't have Version 3.0 of Sync yet. I thought I updated already. Going to fix that today

Have you found a download for it? I’ve been setting up a few vehicles on WiFi to get it to download but it always craps out and every time I call Ford they tell me that’s the only way to go about it. I much prefer the USB method

Yeah, lots of owner forum posts about how the automatic WiFi update system is crap. I signed in to owner.ford.com and registered my VIN, then went to the Sync section of the support tab. I'm in the middle of downloading the installation files to a USB drive now.

It used to be pretty universal but I wonder if not anymore. On two vehicles the website says that the systems are up to date with the "latest" 2.2 installed. Hope it works I'm very eager to try this so I'm looking forward to your experience.

Well, I'm disappointed. A number of things are still wrong with this iteration.

First, the biggest letdown: locking your device causes the infotainment display to freeze on the current view, and prevents any inputs such as rerouting or marking a hazard. This means that...

Second: While using Waze through Sync, your phone screen must stay on. This kills the entire reason I'd want to run Waze through my in-dash screen in the first place. It may be even worse for the longevity of an OLED display than running as normal too, since instead of a dynamic map display, you just have this on your screen forever.
    image1.

Third: Opening Control Center, going back to the home screen, or opening any other app makes Waze stop running on the display. I wasn't even able to take a picture of it running normally because this is the screen you get when I tried to open my camera app.
    image2.

Fourth: Interplay between other mobile apps accessible by Sync and the default audio system is infuriating. I am typically not the type of person to listen to much music while driving, I prefer to keep focus on my CMs and general situational awareness. I turned on Pandora for a moment since it appeared in the Apps tab to see if it was subject to the same usage restrictions as Waze when the device is locked (Pandora seems to work fine when locked, BTW...) and now every time I plug in my device and run Waze, it automatically starts Pandora again too. As if that wasn't irritating enough, when I kill Pandora via the app switcher, my car automatically turns on the normal radio.

Finally, the entire experience using Waze this way is frustrating. I don't think the Sync 3 system is capable of multi-touch to begin with so it probably isn't a valid complaint to say that pinch gestures don't work, but every other input is pathetically laggy. There is a good quarter to half-second delay between pressing the mark button and the menu opening for example, versus the instant feedback running directly on my phone. Swiping the map to look ahead on your route, which I do regularly, is near impossible when parked and would be totally impossible while moving.

So I don't think this is the solution I have been waiting for. This is a huge letdown, since even my old jailbroken phone with the NGXPlay tweak worked much better than this. I expected far more from a first-party solution straight from the developer. PLEASE Apple/Waze developers, just let this be a normal CarPlay app. Nobody uses Apple Maps anyway.

Update #2: The map icons for any hazard not directly on your route or your side of a highway are the extremely tiny dots like the desktop PC user interface when it is zoomed way out. No bueno for when someone going the opposite way marked a cop on their side but he is actually on yours. No ability to read or write comments either.

I also use Waze on my phone in portrait mode, since that gives the most view to your route while ignoring the sides. By nature of the display itself plus the fact that the Sync UI is letterboxed by the menu and clock/climate bars at all times, there is very little of your route on screen. 3D mode would help, but I much prefer 2D maps.

Depends on how you go about it. Yes those kits sure. But you can piece together your own with parts off eBay and just program it with ForScan yourself. Last time I totaled it up it was about $750

Meeeeeh. Still, for that money you can buy a new HU that does 100x the stuff Sync does.

For example these - There are others too, just food for thought because after owning roughly 8 different Fords with various Sync systems I've concluded its Junk.

Yeah for sure without a doubt, I just like OEM items that's all. I have a Tab S3 and iPad Pro I use for my extras. I looked into the full conversion "Tesla" style android kits but they seem dated hardware wise. Haven't found anything aftermarket I really liked yet to make me want to gut the system. The ones that allow retention of heated/cooled seats and climate control are just as pricey as buying the drop in Sync 3 kits.
