Clean the windshield with an ammonia based cleaner
Just be careful not to get it on anything else in the car, and don’t use it if you have a tint strip or windshield tint. I think generally regular old rubbing alcohol does a pretty good job.

I find lathering the sun screen on there by hand works pretty well. The spray stuff isn't that good though. Spf 50 for this guy, helps keep em cool. V1 suction cups haven't failed yet

Sorry, I should have been more clear, it's not sun screen lotion, it's a sun shade to protect the interior and keep it cool.

The problem is, it reflecting the heat outside and the suction cups get heated up and come off the glass.

I would really like to create a mount for the headliner, I've contacted one eBay seller with this idea, but he declined stating mounting the V1 off the headliner degrades signal reception (LMAO, no it does not) and degrades laser alerts (Nope, it does not, I've used this setup for 3 years and go laser alerts)

Clean the windshield with an ammonia based cleaner and a lint free cloth. Clean the cups, and LICK them lightly. A little bit of saliva is the trick. If the cups let loose, they might be due for some reconditioning by dropping them into a cup of boiling water for 10-15 seconds. Then let them dry, reinsert into the mount, clean the windshield again, then lick, and install. I have the original OEM 10+ year old cups 24/7/365 in the crazy Chicago area extremes working perfectly.
I prefer 70% alcohol.

Although I doubt you real
I’m tired of the oem mounts failing when it gets hot.
I need a good set of suction cups for the factory mount perferably ones that I can buy off amazon
Although I think the OEM cups should still work for you since they aren't very old, you could try buying some Adam's Manufacturing small mushroom head suction cups. I bought a bag of 100, and they work well for the V1.

Are we still talking about suction cups? :p
LOL, Yes Sir, we are.

I found a V1 mount in my collection that uses a single, big suction cup and mounted it today.

I'm still on the fence on which mounting solution I want.

You should sell them off, 1 pair for $5, 4 pair for $10 ;)
That's probably the only way I'll ever use them all...lol

Craft store like Michael's get the biggest ones you can find and adapt. Personally, like I posted before, the 3M lock blocks (clear) work really well. Same stuff they give you for EZ Passes.

I don't have a V1, but I use 3m tape where my suction cups are supposed the clip in, just make sure the Rd won't hit the ws as it does change the position slightly.

That’s the problem I have with the wife’s Passat. Tried using the permanent mount I got off eBay that replaces the cups with a rectangular piece of aluminum with threaded holes for bolts that slot into the suction cup holes, up near the headliner, but it needs a hair more room to clear the windshield and still be level. I’ve considered trying to fashion something thicker on my own but haven’t felt like it :)

I guess I could just buy two of them and stack them on top of each other with super glue or more 3M tape...

Actually it was Amazon, not eBay. I’ve messaged the seller asking if they offer a thicker piece and mentioned I can’t justify buying two just to scavenge parts and glue them together.

I did find it on Amazon cheaper, though...

Thanks for the information. I actually have one of these courtesy of @rvacs (thanks, man!), but have never used it. I have been thinking of using it to do some range testing with the V1's rear horn pointed forwards. I'm hoping I can also use it with the R7's dual suction cup mount (minus the suction cups, of course). When Uniden sent us our R7's for beta testing, they didn't have any of the standard single suction cup mounts for it yet, so I don't have one.
