I toyed with it a few times, and that was it. I really need to experiment more.

I often hear local HAMs ragchew on their daily commute or while stuck in traffic. However, not much in terms of LEO alerts. However, I have picked up some accident reports on simplex. I find HAMs usually will get very chatty during natural disasters, large scale accidents etc. I do have frequencies of the local LEOs in few of my memory banks for quick scans of traffic stops
Regarding digital modes, I am an active DSTAR user. There is several repeaters in the area. However, with no local repeaters you can use an internet connected dongle to create your own mobile repeater.

Nice. I’ve already got a scanner monitoring police frequencies for me, but I am looking at an Icom ID-4100A for my first radio which is DSTAR capable

Very nice. Consider getting ID-5100 its not much more but has a much better layout of the display. You can find some excellent deals in classifieds section of qrz.com. Whats your callsign Fox?

Get your ham license (tech) if nothing else. Exam is a piece of cake IMHO. That way you can legally carry a scanner just about anywhere, even in the state of Indiana with its draconian anti-scanner laws!
However, I am not sure how having a ham license changes the legality of having an actual police radio.
Even if it's legal, it is going to be hard for you to obtain one that is correctly programmed so you can hear everything.

On my way to the Dayton Hamfest so I can see the latest gadgets, including the new Uniden SDS-100! Uniden is simply kicking a$$ in scanners AND RDs!

Don’t have one yet, I scheduled my exam for early June. I’ll consider the 5100 if I find a really good deal on one!

Thanks. I will work on getting mine!!

I actually have a connection who can program them for me.

I’d ideally have a VHF, and both UHF ranges. Majority of local NJ is capable of going in those radios. I’d program them receive only on police and fire/ems bands.

And transmit on Ham. Also on certain models I can have the output wattage adjusted to legally transmit on MURS(Vhf).

For what it's worth, though, having a scanner in the car is becoming less and less useful as more police agencies switch over to encrypted digital systems.

I haven't been able to eavesdrop on the PA State Police for ages but haven't been able to since they switched over to PA-STARNet OpenSky.

That system is coming to and end. By 2022, they should have the new P25 Phase 2 System completely online.

They just started implementing it, and it’s in early stages.

It will be a Multiband System, VHF/700mhz.

SP will probably be Encrypted entirely. So far one Troop already is.

Newer digital scanners are capable of monitoring digital and trunking systems

Yeah, I know, but this particular system is actually encrypted.

PA Star net is probably NOT encrypted. No point in it being. No scanner can monitor it....

Doesn’t matter though, as EDACS is ending support for the OS line.

In a few years this system will be off the air. As I said previously, on the new P25 system, SP are already showing up encrypted.

Good to know. I’ve had my scanner installed for almost two years, and used to run CB but it’s really not in use even by truckers out in my area anymore. The only times I ever heard them turn their radios on was when traffic was already backed up and they were bored, other than that I’d just hear old racist guys on what sounded like kilowatt base stations.[/QUOTE]
I started interstate driving with a CB over 40 years ago. Meaningful CM is a shadow of its former self.
