I have had my R3 installed for a couple months now and I've had a photo radar experience (happened twice), where I don't know what's happening.

I see a photo radar vehicle on the side of the road and get no alert from my R3 as a approach or pass the vehicle. I see the operator and the photo radar equipment in the vehicle. I still have everything enabled on the R3, because I in the process of figuring out what I can turn off.

Do these guys sit with the photo radar system off, acting like a placebo? Traffic could clearly see them and braking ahead of me occurred in both situations.

Mrcd it's a different breed of radar which the R1/R3 can't detect yet it very low power what I understand from it which makes hard to detect and jumps around in frequencies.

Lots of information about it here on the forum jump around on the Edmonton forum and you'll get a good understanding of it...

If you're in Calgary it could have been low powered Redflex (K band).

It's rumored that Calgary has gotten MRCD (that the R3 won't detect) trucks also but not sure it's been confirmed yet. I think @System or @Heywood might have been down there recently.

Also possible operator hasn't turned on the unit yet, was packing up to leave, or was playing with I/O.

The issue is is that you're likely running K-Filter and when that's on, it won't alert to Redflex. I'm running a NR DSP and with all filters on the alerts are decent. The R3 in my mind should be the same since it's the same platform.

Confirmed that the new photo radar trucks are in fact Redflex @synistyr. Same models as before, sitting around 24.150

Last weekend I was on Highway 1 at COP (eastbound); a Ford Explorer with the new cameras was taking pics of eastbound traffic. I got a front K alert around 500 ft. on the DSP

@System that's not bad at all for the DSP. You running separated K band for that kind of range?

It does, just not across multiple lanes of traffic.

I usually have my R3 @40% with K filter on, TSF off while in the city. With this setting, the only way I'll pick up these vehicles is being in the lane right beside the parked truck, and only get 150ft warning traveling the same direction they're sitting. It won't go off at all from a few lanes over or if they're on a service road.

At 100% K, I still get no alert if they're parked on a highway and I'm in the far lane, but in the lane beside them, again, couple hundred feet, depending on how much traffic is there to reflect the signal. But @100 there are to many falses in the city to run this setting so just keep your eyes peeled, they stick out like sore thumbs around Calgary.

Unfortunately, you can't really have your cake and eat it to. Either get decent Redflex detection and put up with falseing from increasing sensitivity, or decrease sens. for a quiet ride and be alert.

Also, yes, sometimes they're sitting there not ticketing people. They take time to setup/when they leave and can be parked there not doing anything. In the case of MRCD system's in Edmonton, it's been found that they're using I/O tactics as well for even further decreased detections.

K wide. I have K filter and K traffic filter(?) on. I'm not too sure what they're actually called but I have both enabled. I was at the crest of the hill and he was at the bottom. Wide open road and height definitely helped this detection

I haven’t been down to Calgary for a bit. I’d go with System’s thoughts as he’s there more than me.

If it is MRCD, then your in a bad situation with the R3. You need someone to run by that particular trap with a Radenso, Netradar DSP or Redline Ex. To know for sure.

They do take their time on the set up in Edmonton. I’ve even had them test fire on me during set up.

It takes a while to login, load up Facebook, check their email, and queue up Netflix you know!

Seeing how they’re always setting up by those solar “Your Speed Is” signs, maybe there’s a Wi-Fi hotspot in there?
