Hello everyone,

Just a real quick rundown on the changes regarding donations/premium memberships/credits here. Over time we have had various people mention that they don't completely favor the old Credits style system we had setup when it comes to donations/premium memberships - mainly because it's too much of a complex thing for such a simple task.

Since we generally did not end up utilizing the Credits system in ways we originally thought we would, the Credits system has been removed and we have reverted back to the normal way of doing donations/premium memberships, with a slight twist.

So a while back when talking about premium memberships/donations, we kept good track of our incoming donations/outgoing expenses, which was put into a balance sheet available to everyone who has ever contributed financially to RDF. With the new way we are doing things, this is now back and will be updated regularly!

Each month we will have a donation campaign created based on the upcoming expenses due at the end of the month. These numbers vary based on the month because some things are billed to us quarterly/annually as well as monthly, but either way you will now be able to see the breakdown of the places we are using donations/premium membership subscription revenue at. Again, these will all be detailed each month when the new donation campaign is created for that specific month - and you can see the details and breakdown of charges in the description of each donation campaign.

For any month that receives more than the target donation amount, those funds will be rolled over into the next month.

The current month's donation campaign is also tracked in the sidebar of the forum.

So with all this said, donating/grabbing up a premium membership is easier than ever!

To make a donation, go here:
https://www.rdforum.org/index.php?dbtech-donate/
To purchase a premium membership, go here: https://www.rdforum.org/index.php?account/upgrades

As always, thanks to everyone who has ever provided us with support! It's because of you that we're able to keep this place completely ad free (and it will stay that way forever) as well as provide various services/features/functions that many other forums do not offer.

Feel free to ask any related questions in this thread or via PM!

Thanks again!

Thanks for the update.

So what happens to the credits I/others previously purchased?

So, in reality, there's nothing you can currently (previously, while it was active) purchase with credits and them sitting in your account was essentially a donation. However, you could use them to go towards a premium subscription, so for those people that do have leftover credits in their account, I'm going to contact all of you via PM and let you know how many you currently have, and you will be able to redeem them for premium membership time, or to process them as a donation into the system.

This is not set in stone but most likely how we're going to handle the leftover credits. Just want to make sure it's fair to everyone who still has credits leftover before making the decision.

Personally, I don't mind if my credits get donated. Though, like you suggested some kind of discussion with people at an individual level who have credit left over should be conducted.

Yep, basically at the time of disabling the credits system, there was only one thing you could purchase with credits - that was a premium membership subscription. And actually, we have never had any other item/service/subscription purchasable with credits since we launched the system. So I figure the best idea probably is to basically notify those with credits still sitting in their account that it's up to them if they want to convert them into just a standard donation (essentially the same thing as just having the credits sit in your account doing nothing with them) or have them go towards a premium subscription - either option would not need to be done immediately - it'd be at the user's choosing, so if they do not want to do anything with them yet then they aren't forced to.

Many forums do stuff like allowing custom titles/avatars/etc to be purchased with credits and stuff like that, but I've never really liked that idea - personal touches make a community feel closer together, not to mention the premium membership subscription allows EXTRA stuff on top of those personal touches as well.

If we didn't allow users to customize their avatars at will, and did it like what I just mentioned many forums do, credits would be a cool thing to allow people to buy say a change of SOMEONE elses avatar to something YOU decide. SomethingAwful does this kind of stuff - kind of like a micro-transaction game type thing - and I guess in the spirit of the forum - at least RDF - we'd be best suited for such a system because we actually use these funds for server costs and the like, not profiting off of them... but either way, I dunno, I just like having our users be able to customize as much as possible at the start.

I purchased credits for the raffle, I like that idea, and would be happy to spend money on something like that again.

Wait, it's still April, wtf.

Hmm...

 I've been awake since Saturday at 1am... holy crap:

From: Saturday, April 28, 2018 at 1:00:00 am
To: Monday, April 30, 2018 at 9:37:49 pm

Result: 2 days, 20 hours, 37 minutes and 49 seconds

68 hours awake, I think this is a record.

Need to fix the donation campaign/edit the thread, was supposed to be May 1 when it ends, not May 31. Next month's donation campaign will be from May 2 through June 1. Then the campaign after that will be from June 2 to July 1. If that makes sense.

I wonder how many coding errors I've made on the VPN stuff over the past 24~ hours, rofl... hmm.

so is it just the donations that go towards the monthly costs or do premium memberships go towards it too? I have no issue donating a little every month to this great forum. Ill start pledging some each month. Ive been a member of a lot of forums in my life... this one has been by far the most useful for information, and not just about CMs. We have a plethora of individuals here with a lot of knowledge on different stuff.

Yes Premium Memberships are considered donations as well, I need to tie the system together so it registers Premium Memberships as donations which is something that is on the to-do list once I finish getting a couple other things squared away first.
