Pretty much what the title asks. If it isn't why do the RD still have it included ? I know it can be shut off, but couldn't the cpu power be used for something more useful ?

Depends on location. Ohio and parts of NJ still have it and use it, and it's been seen within the last few months in both places, I think there is even a video on here from Ohio with someone getting legit X band on the R3 late last year from a marked PD charger. most places though don't have it and you can safely turn it off. It's a dying breed thankfully and hopefully it wont be something thats out there anywhere for much longer...

I've run into it 5-6 times around South Bend on 31 between the toll road and the where 31 splits off into 20 and 31 southbound towards Plymouth; verified LEO (ISP). But, I believe it has been the same car within a a mile or two of the same location every time. I've never come cross it in IN otherwise. Outside of that area, I wouldn't worry about it.

Hancock County Sheriff, just east of Indy on I-70 has X band and it is the lower power K-55. I would not disable X band in Indiana just yet.

Wow, thank you for this! I had what a thought was an unusually persistent false X band alert on I70 just before Indianapolis. I was thinking it might be legitimate because I rarely get false X-band alerts on the highway. Now I know...Thanks again.

I just bought an old K55 unit that appears to be in good shape. I am looking forward to clocking cars who have no idea that I'm doing that because most people run with X-band off in my area.

If I were a traffic cop I would want a Python lll in X band! I would make my quota in a few days and could munch on doughnuts the rest of the month! Plus I could play “gotcha” with all the RD users who turned off X band!

It’s even more fun to have a radar gun where they run the same band. I got a Python II K band gun from a gov auction. used to get brake lights but now people don’t bat an eye thinking it’s probably a BSM. Maybe I should get a Ka gun now

X band is in use in New Jersey. I run into it typically in South Jersey.

I use my Bushnell for that. My Talon 35.5 does a much better job though.

I also need to leave X band on in NJ. Not as common as Ka but it's out there.

I personally do not run x band. I'm up in NNJ. Very north, up by NYS.

It's not up here. BUT, down south it sure is still. @Stevedabutcher has just confirmed that as of lately....

Me thinks its almost only locals at this point down there. State Police have if not 100%, very close to Ka band at this point.

For ahl, @ahl395 land and south best to keep it on. But if you ever happen to venture up here, into Passaic/Morris/Bergen, do yourself a favor and turn x off.

    INTERESTING you mention this ...

I was coming home around 3am and got shot with X Band from a Johns Creek LEO. Thinking that is how he has probable cause for a DUI STOP . Pretty Freakin' Ingenious Ingenuous.

I think the antennas are too big for it to make too much of a comeback.

I know NOTHING about radar. So with that said, is it possible to make a more compact antenna for xband ?

Not and have it be all that effective. Antenna size directly correlates to the frequency. The lower the frequency, the longer the antenna needs to be to be resonant on that frequency- using an antenna that's not resonant on that frequency is inefficient (can even blow your transmitter if it's bad enough) and results in poor reception.

Now, the 10.5GHz X band antenna is still comparatively tiny when set against something used by regular communications services (like a handheld 2m ham radio- the ideal antennal length for that would be about 1m long... for that freq in X band, you're talking about a bit over half an inch). But compare that to the 34.7 Ka band antenna- about a third the size. Mind you, these are for dipole antennas, which aren't used for police radar. But even different antenna types are still going to be governed by the same physical laws. So anything in a higher frequency will be correspondingly smaller.

And as for X band in Indiana, I've seen it on I-70 in Terre Haute. Been a few years though.
