There are many members having difficulty updating their detectors (not connecting etc.).
The issue is rarely the fault of the detector or firmware but far more likely the user is attempting to update using an incorrect cable.
If you are trying to update your detector using the much more common "charging cable", you will be unable to update your detector.
You need to locate a data cable to perform the update.
Unfortunately, cables aren't identified (marked) as either "charging" or "data".
You will either have to purchase a cable specifically designated as a data cable or search through all your cables until you find one that is in fact a "data" cable.

Here is a link (thanks Vortex) if you're looking for a data cable.

Well said friend and just a side note.
If you go to a place like BestBuy most of the folks working there do not know a data cable from a toaster.
In the cell phone section almost all of those are charging cables...if you go to the game (PS2 etc.) section those are data cables.

Absolutely right. In fact I tried updating my R3 using a toaster I bought at Best Buy and it didn't work.

Just FYI. ebay and aliexpress has those cables for 0.89 with free shipping from china. Just make sure it's usb 2.0 not 3.0 cause i suspect uniden jack is 2.0.

I ordered 2 cause i keep misplacing those in my place. For firmware upgrade you don't need to gold plating. U just need it to work.

Gold plating is often fake but usb2/3 doesnt matter because usb3 is backwards compatible.

Just a heads up that when I first tried to update the firmware, I received a USB error message saying the bin file cannot be download. I unplugged and replaced from both the detector and the PC. Closed out of shortcut /program and reloaded. It worked fine after that. Something was nominal for some reason. So if you are sure you have a data cable and it doesn’t work, try the above.

I'm confused. Why doesn't the R3 come with a $2 data cable?

Which detectors come with cables?

Someone in China made the cable for 10 cents and a bowl of rice. A distributor sold it to an exporter for 50 cents. Then a importer sold it to the store you purchased it from for a dollar. They marked it up to two dollars and charge you tax. Congratulations! You have participated in the capitalist system, fed a guy in China and bought a 10 cent cable for $2.00 and supported your local and international tax systems.

should also be reminded to download the USB drivers so the computer can see the detector. for example in my case i had to choose the 86bit drivers for windows 10 on a ASUS tablet.

Type dev into your search bar and look at device manager.
