Let me throw this out there! Just think if Mike was still there and the new ownership would not fire him. What would Escort be like? I do believe that some of the stuff that they are producing would not be made. I honestly believe that we would not be talking about any of these other companies. He would be leading the pack.

Since he left Cincinnati microwave (maker of the escort RD) n what amounted to a hostile buyout, and the other partner went into 3 meter dish for cable TV (we know how that went), I'm sure Escort (new company from the Cincinnati Microwave split) would be a totally different company. As part of the split I understand that there was a do not compete clause. That's why the Valentine 1 did not come out for 5 (?) years after the split. I think everyone can agree that Mike was the engineer behind the escort and radar detection. After the buyout he could have retired comfortably but I guarantee you he spent his time developing the V1.. So to answer the question - If Mike had been the one to keep Cincinnati Microwave the escort would be a much better detector and the current V1 might have a few different things with it.

This is just the way my fading gray cells remember the story, I owned one of the first escort (4 digit SN) and continue to run V1's

All i was really doing was throwing a statement out there on how the company would be doing business if he was still working for them.

I think it would of been a disaster if he stayed. Escort is not always loved, but GPS lockouts was revolutionary. Mike V is simple and only has 1 model for 25 years. Escort took chances, even a Navigation and radar detector together, laser jammers, remote units the list goes on.

It's operation of Escort would be totally different. With Mike V, could of come up with the Escort One or the Escort 360 years ago.

The only thing that I noticed when I was more involved in the RD world, V1 was top tier, and others did well with X and K band, till the Ka was added, then Widened. Only did Bel started to come and knock on the doors with the Bel 745Sti and the Uniden LRD2200SW. Soon after the Bel 845/855 sti units, then 970LR/980 matched the V1, till filtering came to an issue with vehicle and more cellular tech coming to the market. That tech of the Bel's 900 series then moved to the Passport 8500 original series, which brought Escort back to the Top Tier levels at that time. .

Remember this at Escort there would be more engineers then what he has at V1. So he could do more or he could have done less. This is the reason i brought of this question. Just a conversation piece. What If?

I've been mulling over this the past 24 hours. If Mike was with ER, I agree that much of what we've seen would never have been produced. I can also see Mike making a pure RD though, like the M3 based Redline or the Stir-O as he likes things pure and simple, aka less to go wrong. The M3 design, developed right after ER bought BEL, was and is a brilliant design. Mike owuld have to give it a nod.

BUT, if wishes were fishes, we'd all swim in riches, I just dont see Mike V have any interest in ER at this point. That ship has sailed, like the Black Pearl into oblivion. Plus, Mike is approaching 70 and other than further refining the V1, what else could he do with ER or the current products they offer?? Personally, I'd love to see another pure RD, like a Redline or Stir-O with TMF2 and no need for GPS. Can you image how nice it would be to run a Redline -O without the hassle of persistent K band falsing. Ther's something to be said for simplicity and Mike is the epitome of that. I'd jump all over that thing in a heartbeat. Mike would be wise (perhaps its his annuity for the future??) to license the JunkK/TMF2 to ER or others since it works so well. I know I would.

This brings up a really good question. What will happen to the Valentine One RD's when Mike is no longer a member of the living? Does V1 have any other engineers designing future upgrades or will it all die with him?

Pretty sure there's a fan with a lot of money who could carry on the V1 torch. If I hit Lotto, I'd be first in line :) No reason why the company can't keep going with proper estate planning and/or sale .

As we both know, common sense is often not common in closely held companies. :(

So who knows what the plan is (if there is one)

Seems that Blinder is in the same shape that V1 would be in if he died. Lots of businesses fail to plan for such eventualities. In Blinder's case, they seem to be relegated to peddling their wares to Escort to get them to market (ShifterMax). Makes me wonder what Escort is allowed, or even capable of doing, to solve VPR threats with that system? I know they have been stating a third sensor for the front is incoming but how reliable is Escort with projecting upgrades? Lots of people on here still seem to be waiting for firmware fixes for rd's so I wouldnt hold my breath :)

The 745 was horrible! It falsed like crazy, even out in the middle of nowhere with no radar around. Compared to the 745 STi, the M3 is as quiet as a church mouse lol. The 745 STis failed a lot too. Back then they didn't repair them they just replaced them. I must have gone through about 10 of them! The 845/855 sucked too. It wasn't until the 970 and 980 came along that BEL was top tier. Now they were excellent!

After my bad experience with the 745 STi I bought my first V1. It was on back order after it dominated the Car and Driver tests so I had to wait over a month for it.

Tell me about it. I'm dealing with this issue personally and it's almost as bad as the VG/RR debacle or Blinder. In VR's case, we won't know until the new owner takes over.

I didn’t have to bad of an experience with those units as you did, as it seems. Never had any falsing till the road monitoring systems became more prevalent with X and K burst on I95 from Va to SC. When Bel introduced better filtering and turning off bands, i agree the 970/980s were excellent units, the. Porsche/Audi screwed that up with BSW.

Im not wishing any ill-will towards Milke Valentine, but I do hope he has a plan for the future of his company when his time comes. Sure as hell hope the V1 doesnt end up in Escorts hands though :)
