Hello, I am in the market for a new double din head unit for my car. I was wondering if any big name brand head units run waze? I'm not looking for an off brand android head unit because those seem to be a hit or miss. My budget is around $300.

    Thanks,
    FineV

You looking for a radio that “runs” Android or can Display Android Apps from your phone via Android Auto?

Keep in mind the if you run a Radio that runs Android it needs internet. That can be a little clumsy and/ or expensive depending on the radio. Some might allow a data plan be added.

If all you want is waze then just look for Any Radio with Android Auto. Just about any after market radio above $100 has it these days.

Android Auto would require that your phone be plugged in though. The app is running on your phone and displaying on the car. This is probably more compatible long term.

Radios running Android often never get major os upgrades. And they are often older versions of Android. Do your homework if you go this route.

Anything that runs Car Play "will" work, soon. iOS 12 due out in September-ish, is supposed to allow Waze and Google maps (it currently does not on iOS 11.4).

You could spend any where from $100 to $2000. It's like saying what kind of Car do you like to drive.

Although Crutchfield is always strictly list price that have a ton of resources on choosing a 3rd party head units and tell you everything you need to get with it and how to install etc.

This is what I am trying to accomplish: Cockpit with 2 Din Head Unit with 7 inch display so I can run Waze on the display. I have an iPhone 6s Plus and a fully updated Valentine One. I run either an opened up on 11 Meters Icom 706 IIG or an RCI-2970 for CB Radio. I would like to start using either JB V1 or V1 Driver but will this prevent Waze useable on the Head Unit? One thing I have read about Apple CarPlay is that if the iPhone is connected to the Head Unit via Lightening Cable, the BT is disabled (is this true). Does the V1 LE part number 20232 work with both the iPhone and Android as I could run my 7 inch Android Table in the car also (don't want to have to buy two V1 LEs to switch between iPhone and Android). Lastly what are my ALP audio options with the setup and cockpit, I am looking at setting up (BT module or HiFi module or both) when looking to get audio over the vehicle sound system?

I am currently considering buying the Kenwood Excelon DDX9904S for the Head Unit.

No. That’s the fiancée’s daily driver setup, plugged into CarPlay an V1Driver running the V1 via BTLE.

CarPlay and Android Audio ignore the Bluetooth "Audio" pairing when plugged in. They don't "disable bluetooth", your bluetooth from the phone will continue to talk to other bluetooth devices like the Dongle.

You really need to run CarPlay or Android Audio to fully understand what it is and IS NOT.

CarPlay is a little more strict, in that what is displayed on the Car Display must also display on the Phone, they are locked together.
But Audio is NOT restricted like that. You can still hear other Apps running on the phone (through the Car) independent of what is on the screen.

Android Auto is slightly more flexible in that you can have one app on the Phone Display and Something Different on the Car Display.

Currently no V1 App will display on the Car Screen under Android Auto or Car Play.

But Waze can be displayed on the Car Screen under Android Auto and will soon under Car Play (it does now on Ford Sync 3).

You don't have to always visually see the V1 Apps. A lot of their function is "muting" and verbal announcements.
You can always bring the display of a V1 App up on the your iPhone but that will "dismiss" any App from displaying on the Car.

Basically Car Play or Android Auto doesn't really add anything for V1 Apps (over what bluetooth provides).

About all it will give you is a bigger screen to see Waze on.

Keep in mind there are "Android" Radios too. Don't confuse that with Android Auto.
What you can and can't do with them is a case by case basis and you'll have to research them.
Keep in mind their primary purpose is still a "Car Radio with a Speaker Phone" and making them do something else can be tricky.

Here are some Android radios. Notice none of them are mainstream (i.e. not Kenwood, Pioneer, Sony etc.)

I used to own a Parrot Android Radio. Very cool hardware. Buggiest thing ever made though and horrendous support.

I hope I hope I hope for iOS 12 Apple stops the bullshit restriction of making the phone work only in lockstep with the CarPlay display. Let me run Waze on CarPlay and whatever other app I want on the phone.

I doubt that will change any time soon. I’m running beta now and don’t expect much to change by Wednesday.

Think of CarPlay vehicle screen as a Second View on the SAME app running on the phone.

CarPlay yes, otherwise it’s a Ford Sync 3 thing.
