    Hi all,
My R3 arrived this morning and I did my initial setup and settings. The firmware version is currently 1.31. I didn't have time to see if that was the newest but I was able to get it registered with firmware notifications, so far none have showed up in my inbox.

Also, as I was performing my initial setup I couldn't find any band segmentation just Ka Narrow.

The unit is extremely quiet in K Band and I really like the auto mute volume adjustment!

Now if I can just find a LEO running Ka somewhere ;)

Did your R3 come already with firmware 1.31 on it? Have fun with it and keep us posted.

    Yes it did.

And BTW I forgot to mention that I am running in Advanced mode. I didn't have a whole lot of time to tinker with it because I had to go to work (2nd shift). I'm concerned that I didn't see band segmentation option anywhere...

There was another thread where a member received a R3 running 1.31 but didn't see an option for Ka Segmentation. I wonder if an update got corrupted? He was also reporting other issues with detections.

Edit: Here is the thread: www.rdforum.org: Can't Turn K Band Off in Uniden R3

I would re-update the detector ASAP and make sure you can see the Ka Seg options, and find someone with a radar gun to test with.

    Update instructions:
    1. Connect R1/R3 to PC with USB cable
    2. PC may automatically download USB drivers if needed. If message says that the device is not recognized, you can manually install the USB driver here: [ZIP] (Install drivers and then reconnect radar detector to PC)
    3. Download and install appropriate file:
R1 – “Uniden R Series SW Download Tool” [ZIP]
R3 – “Uniden R Series SW Download Tool” [ZIP]
    4. After downloading, extract the files to a new folder.
    5. Run “Uniden R Series SW Download Tool V1.16_x64.msi” (or “Uniden R Series SW Download Tool V1.16_x86.msi” for 32 bit systems)
    6. After download tool is installed, run “Uniden R Series SW Download Tool V1.16” from newly created shortcut. Your version of firmware will appear on the application.
    7. Select the OPEN button and browse to the “R1_v131.196.000_3.bin” or “R3_v131.196.110_3.bin” file from the previously extracted files, then select START DOWNLOAD.
    8. After update is complete, close the program.
    9. FOR R3 ONLY: There is no database update with this version, see previous updates.
    10. Run “R1_R3_VoiceUpdate_v1.31.exe”, press start, wait for completion.
    11. Reset the device to the factory default settings by using the menu after new firmware has been installed.
    Fixes (v 1.31 – 10/19/2017)

    • Ka band segmentation
    • White and purple display modes
    • Power cable mute button can now adjust display brightness (press and hold mute button)

Just curious as to why you are in Advanced mode--what did you change up in settings?

You can attribute it to my lack of knowledge about my new detector but at that moment I figured I could onlysegment in Advanced Mode...

So what exactly is the map or mode to band segmentation on this detector?

I believe the firmware on your detector is corrupt. I would re-flash it ASAP using the above instructions.

Once you do, you will hopefully be able to access the Ka Segmentation settings by scrolling through the options on your detector.

See Vortex's article and video guide here:

So it appears the segmentation option is supposed to be right after Ka Wide. I didn't notice it but it is possible I missed it. I will check it when I get off work. I'd hate to reflash if it isn't necessary.

Also, the USB chords that I have I use them to download pics from my camera and video recorder. Will those work or will I need something else?

As long as it's a USB to mini USB it should work fine.

If you can download pictures with them then they are data cables and should work fine.

If you do reflash, make sure you disable any antivirus before running the update program. Almost every issue people have reported has been due to antivirus software or using a charge-only mini USB cable.

Yes it is a mini. I've already plugged it into the side of the detector to make sure it would fit.

Ahhh.... I didn't think of that. Makes sense. Thanks again

...and failing that, try a different mini USB cable. Those darn things are notoriously iffy, one cable to the next.

Is a reflash just a write-over of the existing driver?

It is a re-write of the existing firmware. Before you do that. Try this:

To get to “Band Segmentation,” you need to scroll through the menu until you get to either “Ka Wide” or “Ka Narrow” (depending on which of those settings you already have selected) and once you’re there, press the “Menu” button until you get to “Band Segmentation.” Once “Band Segmentation” is selected, press the “Vol +” button to enter “Ka 1 (segment 1)” and then press the “Menu” button to toggle that segment on or off. Press the “Vol +” button again to move onto “Ka 2 (segment 2)” and once again use the “Menu” button to toggle that segment on or off and so on. There are 10 segments.

If you end up flashing the firmware, make sure you do a factory reset and set up your settings again before driving with the RD.

Thanks Matt! That was the ticket right there! After I saw your post I just had to run out to the parking lot and try it out. I have it segmented so it appears the firmware hasn't been corrupted after all.

Thankfully I don't have to reflash but if I ever do I'll have all instructions here.

Man, you guys are awesome!! Thanks for all of your help.

I'll keep you all posted on my new detectors performance compared to my old V1 and Redlines...

You’re welcome! Yeah definitely share your experiences. Enjoy your R3 and take care.

Btw, you don’t have to be in Advanced mode for segmentation to work. Advanced mode just lets you tweak sensitivity for bands manually. Segmentation will work on Highway & City as well.

You aren't the only one who has gotten confused about the segmentation. As I recall, I thought as your did and I've seen posts from others doing the same. I'm glad you got it figured out.
