    Dear RDF members,

I wish healthy and happy new year to all of you in 2018.

I posted the sneak review for multi functional radar detector and dash cam combo products previously and since then on, it took quite longer than I thought to prepare the live products so far. However, the project is real and we would like to introduce the products at CES next week. As I mentioned earlier, we do not plan to start sales before complete testing/reviews but we will open our booth to introduce to the public in advance before the actual launch of the products. I wish anyone, who are interested in our products, may visit to our booth at CES and share the valuable feedbacks. After the CES, we will plan for launching the products in USA this year. The information is as below. You may choose each category and type the following information and be able to find the location thru the map in the following link.

    ces18.mapyourshow.com: CES 2018 Floor Plan
    Brand : type "Street Storm
    Exhibitor : type “DJP
    Booth : type “62120
Location: Tech East South Plaza, LVCC booth 62120

Street Storm is the popular brand in Russia and we are the actual manufacturer for this brand. We have an exclusive agreement with Street Storm for using this brand products in USA as well. We are considering to use Street Storm or American Radar brands in USA depending upon the product types.

For your reference, I'd like to post the sneak review, posted on the RDF before, to brush up on your memory.

I do wish that this product is well accepted by RDF members for its unique functions, technology and quality. Any of your feedback will be very much appreciated.

Hello! I’ll be at CES so I’ll see you guys there. :)

The first detector, the AR9970BT was a cool idea, but it left a lot to be desired in terms of radar detector performance, false filtering, and overall thought behind the menus and design.

What can we expect in terms of developments and improvements in this regard?

It looks nice but its all about the testing which will be intensive with our RDF members and the truth will come out. We have another company currently that talks the talk but testing doesnt support most of their claims, good luck.

So I had a chance to stop by their booth this week and chat with them about their products. We went over their history, upcoming products, and what they have in mind with launching their new products. I'm gonna go ahead and work on the video interview now, but in the meantime here's a quick look at the 3 products they were showing, one traditional RD (left) and two RD/dashcam combo units (middle and right).

    Street Storm RD's front.

    Street Storm RD's top.

Are they using a usb connector to power their models?

First thought was of people that have wire installed or want to hardwire, adds a new challenge.

It's just a different hardwire cable. There's lots of dashcams that use USB power cables too and so there's already plenty of USB hardwire cables on the market. :)

Just finished editing the interview and it's now up online:

    So here's the highlights:

    They've got 3 different RD's, the STR-9900 EX, STR Argus One, & STR-9970BT WiFi.

The 9900 (the one on the left) is a $99 GPS RD. It'll offer RLC alerts and low speed muting, but no lockouts (due to patent/licensing reasons). Assuming it has decent performance and BSM filtering, it'll be the most inexpensive RD with GPS.

The one that we know about, the American Radar AR9970BT, is being rebranded under Street Storm and will be called the Street Storm STR-9970BT WiFi ($400). Same thing, but it adds WiFi. With BT and WiFi, you'll be able to access dashcam footage on your phone and update the RLC database and firmware (like the Max360c).

The middle one (that looks kinda like a Max2) is called the STR Argus One ($350). It's a similar idea with a dashcam/RD combo, but it doesn't have a display and the case is longer. Because of that, the horn is larger and so they're anticipating better performance. (The AR9970BT's performance was awful so this one better perform better.)

They flew some engineers to the US to test out the performance and BSM filtering. Those are the two things that these detectors really need to get down and so we should find out more about that after they do their testing.

    A few other interesting tidbits:

The detector can use the GPS to know where it is and which time zone it's in. This way it can automatically set the local time while also taking into account your current time zone. I don't know of any other RD that does this (you have to manually set the time zone offset in the settings) and I'm surprised no one else has done this yet.

The detectors have both GPS and GLONASS chips. GLONASS is a Russian version of GPS so it can use two different satellites to help it achieve a better lock. The idea is if you're in an area where getting a GPS lock is difficult (think downtown with skyscrapers, tree cover, canyons, etc.), the extra satellites should help it maintain a lock in tough situations. Personally I don't think this is a big deal in practice. Maybe they've had difficult with GPS accuracy but to me it doesn't seem like a big practical benefit.

The detectors also offer USB OTG updates for Android users. You can plug your detector into your phone using an USB OTG cable and update them right in your car. This is especially nice for the $99 detector that has GPS for RLC updates, but no BT or WiFi for wireless updates.

The main things though are the RD performance and BSM filtering. The menu layout and thought process needs to be worked on as well. Their AR9970BT was unacceptable in my mind when I tested it so they're really wanting to improve upon that. They don't want to officially launch the detectors until they're deemed good enough here on the forum, this way they have a successful launch. So right now they're in the development and testing phase and are looking for feedback and help with developing their detectors

Is anybody here helping to beta test any of these? If they want it to be successful HERE it seems to me they need to put some in members cars like Uniden did, get feedback and make improvements accordingly. If not I would expect these to just be another group of over priced poor performing units from a no name company. At $350 and $400 for the higher end units they need to perform. If the range and filtering sucks none of the other features will matter. They'll be DOA.

So they’re actually actively wanting testers, people who are willing to specifically help them test and develop their detector. If someone wants to do that, that is an option.

That's cool, sounds like a company that's doing the right things to maximize their chance of success.

I would be more than happy to test the BSM filtering for them. I do a lot of city driving and I'm constantly surrounded by polluting vehicles. I'm in and out of dealerships daily so I can find multiple polluters at once.
