Not too sure how to make this, but I'll try to make some overall points, then some in-detail. Again, please remember this is as me, personally, not from a testing perspective(NNJCTG).

So a few months ago, I reached out to @hiddencam @Brainstorm69 who have been very generous with lending me their RD's.

I read the reviews, and saw everyone else's experiences, I wanted in.

Now for those who don't know, I live in the hills/twisties(curves) of NNJ.

In the spring/summer lots of vegetation, tough terrain, no matter what.

The very first thought I had(besides the features, or anything else) is range. For my area, more than ANYTHING else, is range.

The features are nice, and I'll get to that, but remember here, it needs to have EVERY ounce of range. Even then, it's close sometimes. We don't see miles and miles here. Longest I ever got was 1.91 miles, on a hilly straight away(33.8 on my Bel Magnum). That was once. Only once.

I learned very quickly, how sensitive these things are. Ka terms, it does an incredible job of finding that weak signal, and latching onto it. 100%.

A fair amount of my driving is local, you know, for NJ, flat, open, stores, and etc. These guys shine no matter what, but in those normal conditions(for my area), they are the killer. Definitely a step up over the M3. I plan down the line to test the Ka performance settings of each(R vs. M3).

As in overall appearance, feel/look, love it. Lighter(BY FAR) then any M3 I've had. WS mounts of course to be fair. That counts for something when it's up high on the WS. We all know how they love to fall down and dangle by the cable. Had a few times with the M3's it was just so heavy. Never a problem with the R's, they're just so light.

Features: 1.31 is FANTASTIC. When did a RD have so many options??? It's literally the pick of pick. Only thing closest is the XP(love those features as well). Colors, the tones, the sensitivity, it has it all.

In terms of the M3, it was boring. Same old tones, same old red OLED. Sure it was what it was, but who says a RD can't get the job done AND HAVE RANGE(*hint, Escort...*)

It's at this point, the most customizable RD on the market, in terms of features/settings. For the niche market like us, we like that stuff. We can show our friends/SO's like "hey I can change the color/tone" it's a cool thing.

The great thing, NUMBER 1(besides range) is the overall EASINESS of this RD. The options are clearly there in the menu(with one click), they aren't confusing to get to(no weird button sequences(UH HUM...), that just makes it easier. It makes sense, and very straightforward. That's also great to have.

BSM/CAS, the 99% of PT's are Hondas/Acuras. The RD is just so sensitive(I actually have it at Advanced 40% k band), and it still picks it up. I'm a betting man, and I bet Uniden has plans to fix this. I have no insider knowledge. I'm assuming here. But they've been listening to us:) it's a heaven send. It really is.

In terms of overall just running it, I love this thing. Best range, features, and overall feel, IMO. I can't wait to get my own. I just honestly love this thing. Can't wait to see what's in store down the line for this guy...

Just a very appreciated change to the market. Like finally, someone who chooses to listen, and work with us. Uniden, and Radenso/NL both!!

We need to show support for those companies now, and give them the love they deserve. SHINE ON!!

Being in the foothills of NC, I’ll have to agree on range. The R3 is a beast of a RD. And it is so quiet. The customization we can do to tailor it to our specific area is hard to be beat.

The ONLY two things I can fault this detector with are its laser sensitivity (or lack of, compared with, say, the V1 or the Magnum) and the BSM/CAS filtering.

I think my first complaint (laser sensitivity) is a hardware issue - nothing you can do about it with firmware.

However, If I were to ask Uniden for what I want from firmware version 1.31+, it would be to address the BSM/CAS issues (not that they are bad). I think it will just be a matter of time and they WILL get it right.

But, from my experience, these R's are so close to perfect, if nothing else got resolved, I would still be happy with my purchase.

I guess I can see the point on laser detection. But, that ranks up there with voice announcements for me. I wouldn’t mind if they just left it out and the price was cheaper.

I keep saying, the R3 is as close to a perfect RD as we've ever seen. Mine is a freaking BEAST and so QUIET when it needs to be.

Best detector I’ve ever owned. Not perfect, but as ideal an RD as I think has ever been made. Long range and quiet. Could it have a few other things? Sure, but nothing else has as many features in one unit as the UR1/3 has.

    Thanks, and good wright up.

Question for me. I am thinking of getting an R3, but i have seen some say its noisy to BSM's when i had thought that was one of Unidens strong points.

Whats your feeling on the BSM filtering?

If it only has a hard time with Acura/Honda it wont have any advantage over a V1 with TMF2 besides its longer range.

The filter isn't better on the R vs. the V1. I'd say pretty much identical except I've had the V1 filter out CRVs.

The R is noisier because of sensitivity so you have to dial back on k if it bothers you.

Not to hijack this thread, but, I made a drive from Philadelphia to Ft. Worth Tx the week of Thanksgiving. I own a Redline EX, max 360 with the latest firmware and a Uniden R3. I brought all of the detectors with me. After almost 3000 miles in a week, I never removed the Uniden R3 from the dash. It did very well at rejecting BSM's. Well enough that I never considered using one of the other detectors I had with me. I did get some hits with Honda and Acura's but not as many as I generally experience with the Redline ex. Sometimes the detector would be quiet for over an hour and there was plenty of traffic with plenty of BSM vehicles. I set K band to 60% TSF on, Ka Segments 2568 on. and ran in custom mode. I too thought it would be noisier than the others but It was generally very quiet. Except for I30 going from Nashville to Arkansas. Arkansas had portable radar set up every 1/2 mile in all construction zones. TSF did not filter it out and I am not sure what their purpose was unless to see traffic speed through construction areas. Anyway, we drove through almost 90 miles of that stuff and I kept the detector muted. Outside of that, it was generally quiet unless there was a threat. Sure there was the occasional punch throughs but overall very quiet. It even alerted on the way back to Photo speed Cams in Maryland. that was a nice bonus as I had no idea they were using that stuff. After that trip, I am enjoying the Uniden and will be selling the Redline ex first then wait to see what Radenso comes up with their new detector and if it has better BSM filtering.

Been awhile since I've posted, but I have ordered my R3 from BRD, expecting it Monday. I've had my Redline for almost a year now, It's a really good RD, but the chatter was killing me. I went back to lurking on here and read all the reviews on here. I'm hoping it's as "quiet" as many of you say with proper set up.

+1 on supporting vendors (Uniden etc.) who take there customers needs and opinions seriously! Not to go off topic but relevant; Uniden did exactly the same thing listening to their customers and their needs and concerns when we wanted Digital Mobile Radio (DMR) ability added in the BCD436HP series scanners. They even let several of us beta test the versions at a “per order” reduced cost of buy the upgrade as they developed it. Uniden, at least for me is a solid customer orientated company for these enthusiasts radar detectors (and that scanner!)

A question for you guys : at which % the K band can be down and still be 100%
sure i will get an alert from a true/real radar ?
    Thank you.
I run my R1 for few months and never saw a true K threat , only BSM.

Honestly, I don't know. The only time I've been hit with legit K band was in Va since I got my R3. That was back with the old firmware and I was running city mode to cut down on k band falses. The huge db reduction then was too much. But, now I've got mine on 30 percent. Really haven't seen anything to judge if that's still too close.

All excellent comments. I would run out and buy a R3, but I too am waiting on the Radenso RC-M, and the resulting testing results. I live where we have both Ka and K radar. It worries me a little to reduce the K sensitivity in order to reduce K band falses, primarily BSM/CAS encounters..Our terrain here is hilly with a fair amount of curvy roads so reducing K band sensitivity is a little scary.
