Intro

Well, @Vortex sent me @Blindfingers' Max 360 with 1.5 FW still loaded on it, as well as his own Redline EX back from Escort, so it was time for some more testing TXCTG style. I had my Max 360 with 1.6 loaded on it, as well as @nbulatovic's EFL 1.2 so I could down date it in the field. And we planned to update Blindfingers' Max 360 to 1.6 in the field using DT. I met up with @Jag42 and @Deacon in Waco, and we drove out to the Pioneer Pkwy course. We also decided to test my R3 and Redline, and Deacon's V1 as well. So we had a pretty good complement of detectors for comparison.

The Detectors

  • Escort Max 360 (BS69) FW 1.5 and 1.6
  • Escort Max 360 (Blindfingers) FW 1.5 and 1.6
  • Escort Redline EX (Vortex)
  • Escort Redline (BS69)
  • Uniden R3 (BS69) FW 1.30
  • Valentine 1 (Deacon)

The Course

We tested at our old standby, the Pioneer Pkwy course in Waco. It's long, straight and flat, but there is a line of trees about a quarter mile in front of the radar source that the signal has to make it through.

Final Thoughts

As always, had great fun getting together with Jag42 and Deacon for testing! It's great to have friends that share a passion for radar detectors and testing them!

Sorry about the lack of commentary this time around, but I'm just a bit worn out tonight (and kind of getting tired of doing these every Monday after testing until midnight or later). Maybe I'll come back and add some later. Or maybe it's better to let you make the comments and just respond.

I'll finish with the usual admonishment. This is just one test. You need to look at various tests, by various people, on various courses, at various times to get a true picture of a radar detector. So make sure to do your research!

Thanks guys! Honestly the update to M360 has really made it hard to chose the V1 over the M360. The only thing with M360 is the lockout range at +/-30 where as V1 driver is +/-10.

33.8 was probably angled to much on axis,so not much seperation. REX continues to show its strength. We thought the V1 would do better. Redline Ex performed okay. Max360 can be all over the place in performance. Nice presentation Brian. Thanks for sticking around to test more, after we left.

The V-1 simply cannot compete anymore, showing its age as these newer detectors come on line--seems always bottom of the pack in the KA spectrum. The R3 definitely kicking Ass and taking names for the most part!!

Thanks for all the testing guys!!

Very interesting. The M360 sure did better than I would have guessed. Thank you

Maybe Mike V is waiting patiently for Escort's firmware updates to keep dropping the performance of their detectors until the V1 becomes the top performer.

You know, attrition... :)

What speed were you running on the first and second K band testing? I noticed 360 auto mode vs hwy was not very decreased in range on the first test at 45deg, where on the 2nd K at 15deg there seemed to be more of a distance decrease. Am I seeing that correctly?

It does seem to make you think that the 1.6 update has become better the more recently people have downloaded it. It would be interesting to test one of the first 1.6 downloaded updates with the observed decreased performance to see if the 1.6 update has truely been tweeked recently for the better...

And yes, thx to all who participated a LOT of time and energy in this testing

Great testing guys. The R series continues to be very impressive performer. V1 is only ponying up 50% range on ka in comparison. Uniden has raised the bar quite a bit. Time for the other RD brands to pump it up or tear that page outta the book and start over fresh.

Thank you for the testing, a lot of time and dedication! I always am shocked at the difference on 34.7 between the M360 and the R3, insane! I have been running my M360 for the past couple weeks and have had almost NO real encounters, go figure. Might plug in the R3 to see if I can't sniff out things farther away now!

Great test guys! That's a lot of runs! Thanks as always for taking so much time out of your personal lives to benefit the community.

Some observations:
  • The R3 is a beast on 34.7! Double the detection range of it's next closest competitor the Redline-O.
  • The Redline EX is pretty good at off-axis K band :)
  • The FW update to 1.6 on the Max 360 may have impacted K band range a small amount, but Ka appears unchanged.
  • Certainly didn't expect the Max 360 to compare so favorably to the V1, especially after all of the hubbub associated with the FW update. Time will tell on the BSM filtering, but it does change the equation for those needing arrows.
Another all-around impressive performance by the R3. Attowave has an impressive platform on their hands. Really can't wait for the NR DSP!

That is just a monster of a test. Thanks so much TXTCG.

Gotta admit - if I NEEDED arrows and didn't care too much about K, the 360 is a decent solution. I like it better than a V1 because you don't need a phone to see frequency, program lockouts, etc etc etc. I'm not saying this to start another 360 vs V1 argument - I am saying it simply to say that the 360 can indeed be a viable solution for many users, enthusiasts or not (as is a V1, or an R1 or R3, or a...).

Hi guys, noob here, and first time poster to this forum. Thank you so much for this forum and you're great testing and write ups!!! I'm just getting started with RD's again now that my commute finds me on the NJTPK and PA TPK for ~2-3 hours per day. Originally, before finding this and the Escort forums, I had ordered a Max 360 (which arrives today). But based on everyone's glowing recommendations of the R3, I put one of these on order as well -- though it's back ordered for who knows how long.

If one of you would be so kind as to give me a sanity check. Clearly the R3 range (on Ka especially) is outstanding and so I'm wondering if I should return my Max360. I had/have high hopes for Escort live, but so far at least (running not logged in -- aka not premium -- awaiting device s/n -- arrives today). Reports of LEO's seem very, very sparse in NJ/PA compared to what I've seen and confirmed in Waze.

Should I just bag the Max360 and start fresh with the R3? I see many of you have both of these/more than one (though not concurrently as I have read). I liked the idea of the arrows and crowd sourcing -- but unless Premium EL unlocks a whole bunch of live reports I'm not seeing now (without signing in), Waze seems to do a better job. My main use is early Ka/K/X detection at highway speeds on the TPK with limited BSM falsies. It seems like BSM rejection is maybe slightly better (with the new firmware) on the Max360, but this may come at the expense of even less sensitivity (which wasn't stellar to begin with).

I don't really intend to speed, but I like to drive with the flow of traffic (as I feel this is safer). And we routinely have packs of cars going 80-85 (and faster) in 65 zones on the NJTPK, and 70-80 in 55/70 zones in PA. So it's just a matter of time until I get popped. Generally I feel safe 10-12 over, during morning and evening commutes I'll get run over at this speed or will have to constantly change lanes to avoid the slow pokes going 60-70.

Would you be so kind as to make a recommendation for R3 vs. Max 360 for all highway NJ/PA? I live in NJ so I have so limited suburban/rural driving here as well, but I'm not usually speeding (that much) around town. No radar for PA locals. Obviously the R3 is quite a bit less -- I ordered my Max360 direct at retail with defender and extended warranty -- so $300 more than R3. But cost isn't really my main concern. Ticket avoidance is.

Thank you!!!

Thanks for all the time, energy and funds y'all put into testing! The Max 360 and V1 look like a couple of 1600 meter, middle of the pack joggers! The R3 has already won the 5K before those two ever cross the finish line. Uniden is for real! Take notice escort and VR!

Bag the Max360 and get a R3. You Might start a whole new thread,so this won't get de-railed. Welcome to the Forum !

And also, Waze is the superior crowd-sourcing platform. Waze + R3 will take care of 99% of your encounters :) Welcome and happy reading!
