Figured I'd throw some of the research I've been doing for the RDFGS 2.0 project relating to map display and visualization into a thread here, just for some reference/putting forth some ideas to possibly inspire any of ya'll with ideas of potential features of your own...

I'm pretty much locked in with deciding to use OpenStreetMap as a map source, the project is very popular and being open source it will always continue to be so, as well as keep up with the times and changes in web standards.

There's two big frameworks to work with for OSM - leaflet and openlayers.

Here's some samples of stuff you can do with openlayers: https://openlayers.org/en/latest/examples/index.html

Notably: https://openlayers.org/en/latest/examples/feature-move-animation.html (route review) and https://openlayers.org/en/latest/examples/feature-animation.html (showing active threats, etc) and https://openlayers.org/en/latest/examples/arcgis-tiled.html (counties and boundaries!)

And for leaflet which has some pretty (beautiful) map rendering: https://leafletjs.com/examples/mobile/example.html

There are a ton of cool things you can do with OpenStreetMap, ran across this the other day: https://nuage.pluton.cassio.pe/index.php/apps/gpxmotion/publicview?token=EqPISeOfUQ6hUtq&autoplay=1&loop=1&autozoom=1

This is what I have in mind for allowing users to review their trip history - say if they were driving from Ohio to Virginia, and had the RDFGS 2.0 app active with trip tracking enabled, it would generate a report similar to the above link, and you could literally see where/when you were at specific times, when you/the app reported certain events (i.e. ka source), posted pictures/video, when you approached a reported speed trap by another user, etc etc etc etc etc. The amount of data it can display will range from minimal to astounding - depending on how you want to view it.

This type of thing would definitely be cool for fighting tickets as well - with speed/gps tracking and everything, one of the features I'm going to be creating will allow users to create a "courtroom-prepared" style report, which outlines exact details of your actual speed/position and compares it to details inputted from a traffic ticket (I could see this being extra handy when dealing with cops who use visual estimation or "pacing" for measurement methods), and analyzes that data and explains why the ticket should be thrown out.

Preloading data (mainly map imagery) will be a feature as well, to save mobile bandwidth (automatically start preloading when connected to wifi, for example) - there will be a couple of different options I'll develop as far as this goes - such as preloading an entire state, etc, or preloading based on past usage (intelligently) etc.

There are just so many possibilities when it comes to all this. I can't wait to post the finalized app development proposal to you all, and am even more excited to start actually developing the project.

Anyway, just some food for thought if anyone is interested in reading ;).

Wow all that looks really cool! Will the GPS/route making algo incorporate real time traffic like Waze does?

You mean like how Waze shows you streets that are currently having people traveling slower than the posted speed limit due to traffic? Yes absolutely. A lot of data will be pulled in from Waze and other sources to generate all sorts of different layers/metrics in the app.

Speaking of data, forgot to mention in the OP here. I know a lot of people are concerned about privacy and everything these days, and rightfully so. Privacy and security are paramount to the development of this project and you will have the ability to switch off as many "invasive" tracking/reporting features as you want. I'll go into more details about what will be done to protect user privacy and security down the road as we get closer to development, but I figured I'd at least mention that now because I know when I mention all the data/etc that's going to be sucked in and analyzed from this project it probably raises a few concerns with people.

This sounds fantastic! It would be great to see the frequency of the radar used as well. Perhaps if someone could show that the gun used by LEO was improperly tuned, that could be used to get out of a ticket.

Absolutely. I plan to have a few different modes as far as data displayed goes - like, Beginner, Intermediate, Expert, and of course Custom, so people who are just starting out with all this kind of stuff aren't flushed with insanely advanced terminology/specific frequencies/all sorts of crazy data us RDFers love to see when on the road.

And yeah, I see what you're saying about the tuning - that is definitely a good idea and just another reason to have specific frequencies recorded and actually marked in the event their frequency is not within proper parameters.

Honestly, tracking data like out of tune guns and crap, could go well beyond just getting RDF users out of tickets, but potentially anyone else who was the victim of that same gun during a specific time frame. That's why tracking as much data as possible is paramount - it would be absolutely hilarious (and actually what I'm hoping for) if RDFGS 2.0 reports showing out of tune guns invalidated big chunks of tickets.

Re: RDFGS 2.0: Mapping & Visualization Thoughts...

Some more cool mapping stuff utilizing OpenStreetMap...: https://www.mapd.com/demos/political-donations/#/link/mapd/2869726b

^ Check out the link, you should see a page like:

dfsdfsdfsdfsd.png

This is actually somewhat similar to what I want to have the RDFGS 2.0 dashboard (the main page for the full site (not the mobile browser version)) to look like - obviously ours is going to be a lot more complex but the general idea is the same - a map with charts/widgets/etc which update in real-time/as well as display past events based on filters you specify, etc. And be able to go all the way from a world view, down to the alley level, in the map/data shown.

- - - Updated - - -

That's my APT complex in the above link/screenshot. Too many blue dots :argh: lol.

I say this with the utmost respect and without knowing anything about programming, software/app writing, etc: I have no idea how one person will be able to make all of this happen!

Lol, my answer to that is Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg and the countless other number of people who have made such profound differences in the world being only one person ;).

I will get into more detail about the specifics when I post the overall proposal and we start the round of funding, but for the moment I will say that certain parts of this project will be delegated in the form of bounties. These bounties will be offered here on RDF - we have a good amount of members that are tech savvy and it will give you all some opportunities to get more directly involved in the project and be compensated (depending on what the bounty is for, this will be in the form of cash, lifetime access subscriptions, premium tech services like VPNs, web/file/photo hosting, etc) for your time as well.

Yep trust me after working with CJR238 on RDF for 6 years, I understand the need for creating projects that are easy to use but still provide complex functions and vast feature sets, lol.

Tracking actual gun frequencies used would also be invaluable in setting custom sweep ranges for different areas. I'd much rather avoid a ticket in the first place than have to fight it in court.
This project looks just amazing! Thank you for the updates.

This is an awesome project. I wish I know how to code so I can contribute...maybe in other ways.

I know this thread has been dormant for a long time. I thought I'd mention that I've found TomTom maps & traffic data to be good.

Thanks for the link - using maps from a few different sources is actually something we've got planned. When we post the thread outlining the entire project mid-month it'll have everything we've been looking at so far at including, but we are definitely still open to suggestions. Fortunately switching out the map overlay is something that is rather easily done when it comes to this type of thing.
