The filesystem on the SD card looks exactly like a BCDx36HP. I may try programming it with the Sentinel software and see if it takes.

there is no way to tell if its police/fire/etc. in the US so I wasn't expecting any different, I figured it was just going to be a beep to anything on the public safety frequencies

I ended up picking one up figured why not be nice to have a backup scanner and a combo unit so no added stuff.

Seems like it would be easy to do, no? Just go by the TGID if it's a trunked system, or the assigned input frequency if conventional?

I'm not sure how well input frequencies are annotated in the RR DB, but it's certainly possible.

Reports on RR are that it is somewhat compatible with the Sentinel software, at least for lockouts. I'll try to investigate more this weekend.

Re: Uniden coming out with a new beauty...Bear Tracker 885- CB & Scanner- All in One

I actually think it may be possible to display some sort of alpha tag or scrolling TG info on this unit. Underneath the CB channel number is a scrolling 6(?) character alphanumeric display (currently showing "SCA" in the video preview). When it stops on a transmission, the service is displayed here (eg "POLICE" or "FIRE"). I would think a firmware update combined with a Sentinel upgrade would solve this, hopefully combined with the ability to better control over what is monitored by GPS location.

The display clearly appears to be segmented, but the BOM suggests it could be a dot-matrix style display. If that is the case then all of the above goes out the window and it could be as full featured as a BCD536HP.

Will have to wait and see what Uniden does next.

Oh, and it can be programmed with Sentinel and be made to receive things outside of the pre-programmed dispatch channels for Police, Fire, Ambulance, DOT, but it is not officially supported yet.

Could you share a little more about your experience with the Beartracker functionality? What sorts of range do you get with it? Any luck narrowing it down from all EMS to just Police? Which antenna is it using for tracking them? I'm assuming it only works when they're transmitting on their radios, correct?

To be honest I haven't spent much time with this lately. After all of my initial questions and concerns got no response from Uniden, we decided not to install it in the Wrangler and it has been sitting on a shelf for a few weeks. I picked up a BCD436HP from that Walmart sale a few weeks ago and it is far superior.

There are reports from a trucker in AZ on RadioReference who was testing in in the desert, and experienced all the same issues I have encountered in the Northeast. You would think the middle of the desert would be the ideal location to test the Beartracker functionality, and it's really disappointing to hear it's not useful even under these conditions.

The Beartracker works by monitoring the repeater input frequencies for systems in your area and alerting if a transmission is detected over a certain threshold. It doesn't do any additional filtering by TG, so there is no way of knowing what type of unit it is (eg Police, Fire, EMS, DOT), and the range depends on conditions.

There are separate antenna connections for the CB and scanner side, and it comes with a suction cup wire scanner antenna for windshield mounting. Obviously not the greatest antenna, but fine for picking up transmissions from your local area.

I haven't decided what to do with this yet. There are no indications of fw updates or any interest from Uniden in improving this unit, although there are a few seemingly trivial fw updates they could provide to make this unit useful.

Depending on the release date of the NR-DSP, this may be in the classifieds soon. Or, if Uniden decides to actually support it I may give it another shot.

Mebbe I'm just doing something wrong, or don't understand modern scanning, but everywhere I go, the scanner cuts out briefly on rx every 5 seconds like clockwork. Tried two different antennas, turned of priority and wx alerts, no change. I've only been running it for around 3 days ... Any ideas from people in the know on scanners?

What scanner are you running? Can you take a picture of the screen? Sure sounds like some sort of priority is on. Many Uniden scanners have Weather Priority, Close Call Priority, Favorite Channel Priority, etc. Make sure all are off.

You probably have priority channel set. Every 5 seconds it goes to the designated priority channel to see if
there is traffic. Should be a menu item to disable it.

In that case, make sure you have the CB/scanner priority (called "Audio priority" in the settings) set to "scanner" as well.

How is the 885 working out for you? I decided to go with a BCD436HP because I didn't like the lack of control the 885 gives you over what it scans, and how it provides no info about the frequency.

Thanks guys, I checked all of the things suggested and the problem is gone :)

I like it so far, but as you say I don't like not seeing what frequencies I'm stopped on (my old one did that), like my max 360 shows the frequencies it picks up ... I haven't tested the beartracker feature enough ... near my home it goes off like a cobra on K band, but between Brunswick, MD and DC it's silent. Like everything else I need to learn to use it, heh. I had a lot of trouble getting my CB antenna tuned (I don't think its radio related). I got a small antenna, a Tram 703 (I don't want a whip on my WRX) that people said worked ok ... I got ch 19 at about 1.7 by extending it as far as I could. Seems to be working now. I tried this (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B072P2K85C/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) for the scanner without much luck. I wound up stringing the supplied copper wire with suction cups along the driver's side a-piller with wire ties, beneath the trim. Seems to work pretty well, picking up LE mobile units up to 20 miles away so far. I mounted the GPS reciever in the upper right corner of the windshield.

And thanks again for the the replies! :)

Also ... there's not much room in the WRX, I wound up 'gluing' (heh) the bracket to the front face of my glove compartment with that red 3M double-sided tape that holds up my RD and my Accessport ... we'll see how that goes, heh (haven't had to drill a hole so far).

'Nother issue I have discovered. I run the scanner line out into the aux in in my car ... turning the 'talkback' function to zero is not really zero, and I still get talkback, and therefore feedback from my car's sound system. I'll post if I figure it out.

Update ... the 3m tape lasts about a week. I'm going to order an extra glove box and drill holes in it to use along with the 3m tape. Unfortunately, so far the bear tracker feature seems utterly useless on road trips between WV, VA, DC, and PA. It is in no way a substitute for an RD as Uniden advertises.
