So the Spectre Elite arrived in the mail today. As soon as I picked it up, I had to leave so I quickly threw it on the windshield, grabbed a GoPro, and hit the road.
Right now I'm mostly getting a feel for the Spectre, learning what all the knobs and dials do. I haven't had a chance to read the manual yet or anything. Here's my first experience with it.

I got a few blips of stuff driving down the highway but the main detection was as I was arriving close to my destination. Up the road there was an orange SUV. I recognized it as my friend's SUV. I know he has a cheap Cobra and I saw the coiled cig. lighter cable running down his windshield. He was parked and not in the vehicle but the Spectre was still going bananas anyways. When I parked and met up with him, I asked him if his cig. lighter provided power even when the car was on and sure enough it did. His Cobra was still on. :D

After this encounter and rewatching the video, it's all making more sense, and I'm getting the idea of how a LEO can find a car.

The filter switch lets you cut back the sensitivity as you start getting closer to the source.

Further reducing the sensitivity using the dial and rotating the Spectre which is very directional lets you more easily pinpoint which car is the one setting off the RDD.

Great video on how it works! The swivel makes alot of sense on how a LEO would know what vehicle is spewing leakage. Youre like a kid in the candy store with this new toy! Have a great time with it. We're probably all going to be jealous :) Looking forward to more vids and testing! Thank you!

Great video! It appears they designed the Spectre with tunnel vision, so it's easier to pinpoint which car has the RD. That's bad for us, but I'm curious how it will work against a more stealthy RD like the Radenso or Net Radar. If all you get is a quick blip they won't be able to swivel it fast enough to ID the car.

Looks like the cops have been playing a Pokémon Go-like game for years then! Haha

P.S. Friends don't let friends use cobras so he must not be a very good friend!

thanks

I'm interested in this too! :wesavedscience:

Nice! Pretty cool to see how it operates in real life. In a big pack of cars, on a 3-4 lane highway, at those speeds, it must be difficult to know which vehicle it was.

Yeah highway is a lot tougher. There are a few things the Spectre offers to help you with that like a super responsive rampup where the signal immediately dies once the car passes by. The officer would have to spin around and do a little more digging to figure out which car in the pack has the RD.

I'm collection clips like that right now as I drive so I can put together a video showing how to use it on the road. :)

Many years ago I was running a leaky detector in a state that they were illegal in on the highway , patrol car went past and luckily i was in a pack of 4 vehicles, HP spun around to chase the group but I had turned it off by then but they cruised up beside each vehicle looking for the culprit, needless to say after that close call unit made an exit out the window.

I knew those things spewed RF but had no idea how badly they leaked. Thanks for the video. I would love to see videos of how other detectors leak including the V1,m4's, radenso, and uniden. Thanks Vortex.

No videos, but testing data is here: https://www.rdforum.org/showthread.php?t=60101

It's going to be really interesting to see whether Vortex's testing matches up with those results or not.

See if you can sit it for about 10 minutes near an M3 and see what happens ??

Good idea, see if it leaks during calibration cycles. Also try powering up a M3 near a Spectre and see if it leaks during the startup.

I like that idea. It's rainy today and it looks like it will be this weekend too which puts a damper on driving-based testing, but there's a bunch of other tests like this I'd love to do in the meantime. :)

Someone else mentioned turning off all bands on a V1 and seeing if it still triggers the Spectre.

I did the powerup test yesterday and the M3 doesn't trigger the Spectre on startup. Skip to 2:49 or so in this video to see that:

For the 10 min test I'll turn on all bands and all segments just in case.

Really well done video!

As an aside, isn't it pronounced like "spek-ter"? Like a ghost?

I think it is. I've always pronounced it the other way in my head though so it's now a habit I gotta break. :p

Haha, yeah, I've done that many times (sometimes humorously). Was just curious, because maybe the manufacturer pronounces it differently and I've just never heard it spoken out loud, which wouldn't be the first time. I've heard others refer to it as "spek-truh" as well, so even more confusing.
