So I understand mswlogo that you built a distance measurement feature into V1Driver that Deacon just used for testing. Was that just in the beta or is that now in the public release too? Could you show us how to use that feature so we could have this thread be a reference for testing purposes?

I can give you the quick and dirty version:

1) Go to Debug Settings.
2) Enable Display Distance to POI.
3) If testing with anything other than the V1 itself, enable GPS Always On.
4) In the map, tap your location's blue dot, and then press and hold the "My Location" bubble to drop a POI pin.
5) Name it, and when you go back to the main screen you should see distance to it.

The "GPS Always On" option is much harder on the battery than the normal operation, so remember to go back and disable that once you're done. I sometimes wonder if it's a lack of consideration of those finer points that make people believe apps don't work well. As someone who's worked for a software company for 15 years, I can tell you that from everything I've seen V1Driver has been extraordinarily well done.

That's perfect, thank you! Just followed the steps and it worked perfectly. The only thing that confused me is when you go to drop a POI pin, you enter the name in that first box where it says "Say: Warning Ahead." I figured that was a text to speech section but typing something in there like "Radar car" will label the pin with that name.

Honestly I don't mess with POI's much at all, and I didn't take the time to experiment too much with all the nuances of them when doing the RD testing. I guess mswlogo would have to give you the low-down on that aspect of it. If I had to guess, I'd say the thought is for it to alert/announce when you get "near" a POI, and you get to define how many feet out for that. I left the distance field blank, so it never announced "Radar Car" or anything for me.

PS I almost think this thread could do more good in the "Countermeasure Testing & Related Videos" if others didn't know this was even available as an option. Hell, now I'm wondering if you even need a V1 w/BTLE at all in the first place to use it, or if you could just get the app from the App Store and use it solo, regardless, just for this purpose. No other app exists in the App Store to do this kind of waypoint/POI measurement that I've been able to find.

Cool, good idea. Thread moved to the testing section.

There are some other apps that can do this sort of thing too, but they're typically dedicated apps and I wind up deleting them and then having to do the research again to figure out which app is best.

There also seem to be more for Android than iPhone last time I checked so it's nice to have the feature for the iPhone (since that's my main phone) in an app I already keep on my phone.

In a previous test I used a different app and it seemed to be working well during testing, but the GPS inaccuracies invalidated the results and I had to throw out the app's results altogether. I'm hoping V1Driver is more accurate in this regard.

Yes, I know there are several that could be used on Android. But from the App Store I wasn't able to find anything. It looks like SpyGlass is the one mentioned in that thread that might work. But you're right, now that it's built into V1Driver, I don't have to think about it anymore :)

Now that I'm thinking about it, I realize you don't have to have a V1 at all to use V1Driver for that purpose, if you're willing to shell out the $10 for it. Which, I mean, why not support a fellow RDF member who's doing great work?

It will be as accurate as your GPS Accuracy and as often the iOS decides to notify there was a GPS Location Change.

There is an additional feature that if you are testing the V1 it will automatically do a "Hold" immediately when it first sees an alert.

Even though the screen might delay a little the distance value is captured at the time of the alert.

Without V1 hooked up you can tap the Distance and it will do the same thing and immediately capture the distance and then display and hold it.

The only thing it could do further is interpolation between GPS updates based on your current speed. But it generally updates GPS faster than the screen refreshes so I'm not sure how much that would improve accuracy.

I was thinking of adding a MIC option so if it hears another Detector Beep it does a hold :)

That's cool about the hold feature! I didn't realize that. You can tap right on the distance on the main screen and it'll lock that for you. Cool. :)

I'll have to go test it out to see how the GPS update speed works in practice.

Something that'd be cool is to put the phone and RD side by side as you drive towards the target, whether it's a radar car or a Spectre. It'd be nice to see the distance and RD together so you can watch the distance get lower and lower and get a feel for distances in realtime as you watch the video.

The main screen with the distance is good when running a V1 because you get all the other info.

I know this is a bit of a stretch beyond what V1Driver is used for, but if we wanted to run it without a V1, what if there was a clean screen that simply had a big number displayed showing you the distance to the target destination without all the V1 appropriate stuff? It'd be more of just a distance measurement tool that, for the camera, could be placed next to the RD.

This might be enough to convince me to buy a used iPhone and V1Driver...;)

I used this last weekend and LOVED the feature. It was monumentally helpful for testing purposes. Just set it once and you can do test after test driving back and forth and see when the RD goes off.

Here's a sample video from this past weekend showing it in action:

Thank you for this feature! It's soooo helpful. :)

Thanks for the Video !!!

Oh and thank Deacon for the idea.

That detector sure was flakey.
