This Is Why Dash Cams Are A Necessity

I'm sitting at a red light waiting to turn left & the Esclade in front of me decides to put it in reverse & ram into me. We pull over & he is very apologetic, admitting he didn't see me & it was his fault. We do the usual exchange of info & take pictures & decide that I'll go get a couple estimates & than he'll decide if he wants to pay or go through insurance. I get 2 quotes (over $1000 in damage) that same day & text him the price, no reply.

Next day I leave him 3 VMs & 2 text with no reply so I decide to call his insurance & file a claim. Turns out he already filed one the day of the incident stating that I rear ended him. The only thing that saved me from my $500 detectable & increased insurance rate was my dash cam. I'm not sure if he planned the fraud from the beginning or decided to after we went our separate ways.

Moral of the story is it only takes one time for a dash cam to pay off, and don't buy a cheap one that you can't rely on!

Camera used was a SG9665GC V1. YouTube doesn't do the video quality justice, much better in raw format.

I think he was wanting to back up and take that road to the left!! Did you show the dash cam footage to his insurance company---what did they say after you proved he did it??

Fucking idiot. Glad your cam has your back. Should have called the police so criminal charges could have followed! Your insurance is gonna love every second of "fighting" this one. Thanks for the video. Glad you're ok

Glad that you had the camera! The only thing that I would add (and you may have done this) is read out loud, for the record, his plate.

Wow, Thank goodness for the dashcam... I'd hate to have to read a different post: "I wish I had a dashcam this morning!"
When someone is rear ended, they are typically in the clear, so this should have been a call for a police report, as it was clearly his fault which he admitted to you (but no one else). Had he admitted it to the police it would not have been an issue.....

Did you tell the guy you had a dashcam in your messages?

Awesome thread and video. Glad you caught everything on camera. I recently bought a dashcam and feel the sudden urge to get in installed with a quickness.

Hopefully he gets penalized somehow for being a big fat liar!

@jon7487 What software did you use to blur out his plate, and face .....
Not sure why you bothered, I'd want everyone to know who did this ... Sort of like the video of the towtruck operators who took the GTR for some joyrides....

I did, they were very surprised but grateful that I had the footage. They said it made the process go a lot faster.

Crazy! I always get a police report before I leave the scene.

Very true on the police report, I didn't think about it until after I got home. After I got hit I was shaken up & not thinking very straight. I'm not sure if it was the adrenaline or what. Hopefully I'll be better prepared if I'm ever in another accident.
I never mentioned to him I had a dashcam. I knew that he could easily spin the story since I was in the rear so I figured he could dig his own grave if he wanted to try something.

That's great advice! I'll have to try and remember that.

It's wonderful insurance, especially since most witnesses don't stop now a days. Not here in CA at least. I went back & checked my rear footage & there was a Mercedes behind me who simply backed up & went around right after I was hit.

I blurred the faces directly through the YouTube editor. I thought about leaving it but I want to avoid any possible headaches in the future.

Not sure what grounds he'd have for a lawsuit. It shows something that happened in a public place, and shows the outside of his car (no expectation of privacy).

Gawd...yes...this....is....why. It really prevents fraudulent claims. I hope the POS got in trouble for trying to defraud the insurance company :\

I see that all the time so I only pull up to where I can still see the tires on the car in front of me.

BTW: Not many people know that is a wrong way ticket. Reversing in a lane of traffic is the same as driving the the wrong way on a one way street or driving on the wrong side of the road. This rule also applies to the shoulder.

Off topic: "Title of Record" is one of my favorite Filter albums. I'll have to put it back on my regular rotation.
