I am new here and just purchased an Escort IX for my 2013 BMW 650iX GC. Has anyone here used a Mirror Tap from Blendmount to power an Escort in a BMW? I have seen a post on Bimmerfest in a 5 series (I think) but was looking for some advice here. I would really like to get rid of the dangly cord.

I have a lot of other questions, but I feel I need to learn a bunch of acronyms before I can ask, LOL.

I have one for a GMC Acadia and one for an Infiniti g37. They are both new. If either of those are compatible for you, I'll send it to you for just shipping. I decided to hard wire a smart cord

It should work fine. Use a multi meter to find which wire in the bundle provides a solid 12 volts positive. There should also be a ground wire in the bundle. If not, you can always run your own ground. Modern vehicles use varying voltages and some in the harness might have different DC voltages so use a meter.

Try looking here for an acronyms list (https://www.rdforum.org/showthread.php?t=11396)

Decided to do this in my Camaro. Was a pain in the ass and definitely took me more than 15 minutes.

I did this in my car and it took about 5 minutes, but I drive a Hyundai so it may take longer in a BMW.

We have an X5 and ours is tapped either in the mirror or the power supply for the moonroof.

I had it done by a BMW dealer. I used to do that sort of stuff on my own, but have heard that the BMWs electronics can be sensitive to this stuff. A few shops I called wouldn't touch the car.

I think the dealer charged me $150. Definitely pricey, but this way if I ever have an electrical issue i shouldn't have the dealer blaming the direct wiring job.

I soldered my RJ11 cord to the RVM power wires.
Have there been very many issues with the mirror tap pins shorting out together or damaging the connectors while in operation? I'm thinking about trying some out on my wife's SUV.

I made my own mirror tap. Cut connector off an old cobra cigarette adapter and soldered stranded wires to a couple of solid pcs of copper wire, put shrink tube on it and haven't had a problem.

That's not a bad idea. I may have to try that. Thanks.

If using a detector with a RJ11 port, the red wire is positive and the green wire is negative/ground.

Sorry, just saw this question.

Mine was a barrel connector.
Hot inside and Ground outside.
When I was playing with RJ
Didn't pay any attention to wire colors, used a voltmeter. Seen too many times that some people don't follow color conventions and assume nothing... Meters don't lie LOL.
Some people have said Home Depot has cables you can hack to dyi.

Inquiring minds and asked what the Radio Shack part number was for the connector.

Tip 3.5mm OD 1.3mm ID.
