I will be doing a mileage run to ATL tomorrow but I am going to do something unusual for a mileage run: I'm going to leave the airport. I want to see the World of Coca-Cola Museum, the CNN headquarters, and the Georgia Aquarium. Any other recommendations on stuff to do if I am spending about half a day in Atlanta?I think @shifter and GA Speed are from this area, anyone else?

Never been to Waffle House. Worth going?

I just noticed you're from CA. some ATL tips from a fellow Californian.

- stay away from any sort of Mexican food. it sucks compared to real Mexican.
- you probably won't like Southern food unless your mom used to cook like that.
- Waffle House is a novelty the first time. then you realize it's no different than Denny's.
- the drivers suck, but not in the way CA drivers suck. these drivers actually don't know how to drive.
- stay away from the Italian Coke sample at the Coca Cola museum.

Mary Mac's Tea room on Ponce is an Atlanta tradition as well as the Varsity.

Should I be okay just taking Uber from the airport to downtown, and then using public transportation around downtown? I am not planning to rent a car because the duration of the trip is so short (less than 1 day).

CNN center World of Coke and Aquarium are all right there together. I have never used public transportation in ATL so I have no idea about that. Well I rode Marta once, and I'm just thankful I survived it!!!

Marta, although generally speaking is safe, is a pretty poor transportation system. It'll probably do fine for a day. You can take it from Hartsfield downtown if you want. Uber would be quicker, but a fair but more expensive.

If you're into college football, the Hall of Fame is a good visit and right around the other things you mentioned. They are all enjoyable to me that you have listed.

Fox Bros BBQ is heavenly. I personally enjoy Waffle House quite a bit. All Star with a pecan Waffle. Not that it's fancy or nice at all though.

Hmm...I'll have to see if I'm in the mood for BBQ. They brought in a whole bunch of BBQ meat to my office this past week and I might have had enough of that for a while though. Just gotta see tomorrow.

As far as Uber goes, I've got a free ride because of a referral.

So...tried to book an Uber for the first time in my life. Uber sucks, and refuses to accept my Google Voice number as valid (I never give my real number to companies). So, I was unable to book an Uber and their customer service hasn't responded either. On MARTA now, which is kind of a joke. No station announcements whatsoever.

MARTA is a joke even for us that live here. If Uber isn't working for you try Lyft. They need a real number to keep people from referring themselves over and over to get more free rides.

We did the coca cola museum and CNN in one day - not sure you'll be able to fit the aquarium in as well. The soda to avoid is called Beverly - it's bad. It's so bad they have a magnet that says "I tasted Beverly in Atlanta" (Of course, I was intrigued, so I did taste it, and I do have that magnet. Have a second cup of something else handy to get the taste out.)
We had dinner at the Varsity - a famous drive-in. Pretty good, I did like the frosted orange drink they have. Reasonably cheap, which was good after the admission costs for coca cola and CNN.
Have fun!

I'm going to do Coca-Cola and the aquarium. If I don't have time, I'll skip CNN.

And wow, Uber CS just responded and told me that Google Voice is not supported and I'll have to use another number to continue. So it's Lyft for me I guess. Next time, I'll just rent a car. I always do best when I'm in a car and behind the wheel...

You're OK today. Last month we were there for a short weekend trip and stayed downtown a couple of blocks from those sites. We drove around Sunday but got caught up in Falcons traffic around the old Georgia Dome. What made it worse is my wife and daughter wanted to have pics made around CNN, so I dropped them off, and tried to circle around, but took a path that wouldn't allow it, then there was an accident, etc. I am still getting over it!

I went one year to the SEC Basketball tournament and stayed north of town, taking Marta to and from downtown daily, and I thought it worked fine for that. In fact, the last day I checked out of my hotel, parked on the west side to make it easier to hit I-20 West in my route back home to Birmingham, and used Marta there and back.

I'm not used to public transportation, though, so if it fell short of others (which it probably did), I didn't know it. Ignorance is bliss!

I would do Coca-Cola, Georgia Aquarium, CNN, and ride the Ferris wheel thing that's right next to it. Should give a decent view of the city today.

I only had time to do Coca-Cola and Georgia Aquarium before I had to go back to the airport. Left the airport late (due to the Uber issues I was having) and got to Coca-Cola around 10:30. Stayed until about 1:30, had lunch at Legal Sea Foods across the street from the Georgia Aquarium, then went to Georgia Aquarium at around 2:30 and stayed until around 5:45. I wanted to go to that Italian place that shifter mentioned but I ran out of time because I hadn't finished seeing everything at the aquarium, and my flight was at around 7:30.

There's the underground shopping center, or whatever that was I walked through. I used to go to ATL often for our contract with Coca Cola (a startup I worked at years back).
Atlanta is compact - squeezed into a relatively small area surrounded by woods. (Compared to LA which is just one giant city for 90 miles...)

I would not mind living in GA, actually... love the area. (I drove the Jetta through ATL on my way back to CA last year).
