Some has been bugging me, I think 4 or 5 or even 6 years ago at 20/53 one mile north of the Rome dirt speedway on the 4 lane. A marked (Chevy or Ford) marked GAHP (no light bar that I remember) blacken out windows was backed up all most into the woods on a small rise grassy log road watching both directions. Did this Leo have lidar back then or say a Kustom hand radar? His side windows were dark dark. If he had a mounted radar can up front, it would have to be turned sideways in order to work but most don't move the can for they are mounted solid. He guy would not have been sitting there for nothing. What did they use back then in that area?

They did use Lidar back then, and the HP patrol used a little bit of everything too.

I'm no expert on tint, but since one of the purposes of tint is to keep the car interior cooler it probably blocks IR light, so that would mean LIDAR wouldn't work well through it.

That said, I've never tried shooting through dark tint since my car doesn't have any, but someone else here probably has.

I take it you had no RD at the time, or you had one and it never alerted?

They could have used handheld radar through the side window, or re-aimed their dash antenna sideways (it is possible to do, but not many LEOs bother). They could have been doing something other than speed enforcement as well, such as watching for impaired driving, talking on the phone, expired tags, etc. or just doing paperwork or taking a nap.

Clear glass (like my W/S does attenuate the Lidar IR beam (w/ 1 gun exception). However, my side windows do have a 'light' OEM tint to them & I find even more reduced range when shooting thru it. The very dark tint "North Alabama" references would have severe range reduction I suspect.

The 1 exception to all my other Lidars that are susceptible to max range loss are the DragonEye Lidars...damned it they don't still shoot near their max range still.

That always puzzled me because of the blackened out side windows. It could be, something that kpatz stated that could be a clue. He could have been sitting just as a show of force because the of the race at the race track that night, in simple words, nothing to do but killing time before the race and watching traffic and the rigs coming in. And after the race, their were a GAHP (inside lights) and a local (light bar) working the traffic leaving the race. He could have had no speed measuring devices but was one the GAHP that does crowd control/patrol at events, which would make sense. The V1 did not alarm and I knew that lidar would be very hard to use with the side windows roller up. I wondered if anyone had seen hand radar used in that area? Or radar can mounting brackets that were used at that time that could be adjusted easily to turn the front can if he had one? What did they use back then in that district?
