This is what the Bay Area looks like on a typical weeknight. No, the entire area is not literally swarming with cops. The Waze maps looks the same except if you zoom out too far it just starts hiding alerts. These are all EL police alerts from Waze.

If I am to literally trust this map, I would be pinned at the speed limit bracing for a laser hit at any moment.

A 40-50 mile stretch between SJ and SF is too far out?

The story isn't much better at a smaller scale either. Here's a 15 mile stretch of 101.

On my 15 mile drive home I got 4 reports of police reported ahead on Waze. I'll let you guess how many were there. Hint: it was less than 1.

Yeah, the problem is the icons are way too big. The screen shot I took was from the browser version, much easier to see. I don't recall seeing those big icons on my older Waze app...

One of the issues with the Waze app itself (this is Escort Live -- they cross report police reports) is that if you zoom out beyond more than about a 5 miles per screen view, it will hide many alerts. But yeah if I plot a trip from Cupertino to San Francisco (47 miles), it shows approximately 10 police reports along the way in the travel timeline, which averages out to just a few miles of uninterrupted travel at a time.

Unfortunately every time I've gone out to hunt down these cops, I get maybe only 1 in 10 as legitimate. I mean, it's great for fresh reports with 5+ confirmations. But if you have a 30 minute old report, it's really hard to decide what to do about it. The false positive rate is just too bad to take seriously.

It definitely needs to be customizable (Waze app, not sure how Escort Live app handles it), so that you can edit police distance, age-out reports in 5 minutes, etc.

I know I'm a waze fanboy, but are you sure it's not EL screwing things up? the waze map doesn't show that for me...

Waze is not customizable at all on iOS :(

Escort Live is actually nice -- you can restrict it to 30, 60, or 90 minutes as the horizon. I find that 30 is perfect. But then I still pass unreported cops that have found good hiding places.

Start zooming in and inspecting 101 or 280 on the west side of the bay, 1 exit at a time. Count up the reports... Waze has a pretty creative algorithm for hiding things from the map at that zoom level....

Now, if there were a way to write some server software that could just retrieve the data feed from their server, then re-serve it back in a better app. Of course someone would get sued for that, but if it were done ala-Pirate Bay - would be cool... (just could not make money on it though).

It just doesn't seem that bad. The 280 labor day weekend shutdown is reported multiple times, but it's not stacked with cops.

Actually you are onto something. Seems like Escort Live is importing all the construction reports as police reports....
EscortRadar, can you see if there's something weird going on with Escort Live importing alerts? My area is not swarming with cops right now!

The ideal icon size depends on the location and the number of users and alerts (and possibly even the time of day). Here, the icons look way too small: https://www.waze.com/livemap?zoom=11&lat=39.9408&lon=116.44684

The zoom level of that map is roughly the same size as jdong's original photo. In a city with over 15 million people, there tend to be about 1-3 active Wazers at any given time. I could have sworn that I was the only person marking LEOs when I was there.

With some serious editing of Waze files, here is how you can get your screen to look....:woot::hatsoff::iia:

I turn the alerts down to the 30 min interval and that gets rid of most of them.

Yeah, I honestly find this the only event horizon value to be useful. I'm sure if you lived somewhere with fewer Waze users, it'd help. But along my commute path, literally every driver seems to be using Waze... and surprisingly active at reporting everything from small rodents to people who are stopped.

LOL! I was using the app on the work phone. Had the music cranked up and I thought I heard something and glanced at the phone. Only need one guess for which alert was flashing on the screen.

Watch out! Vehicle stopped on shoulder ahead.

For those of you who have their screens cluttered with icons of other Wazers - you do know you can hide the other Wazers, right?

Still just because one area is infested with over reporting doesn't mean it is a useless tool elsewhere. I saw where one forum member complained that people were reporting construction that had been going on for a long time... well, not everyone is a commuter, Skippy, and somebody may be on their way down that stretch of road for the very first time and find that to be valuable information.

These are tools, whether they work for your particular task or not is your choice - but why someone berates a tool because it is inapplicable for their particular situation is beyond me. Use it, or not. Whining about it is pointless.
