Will the maps stay up to date doing this or would the app need to be updated?...I'm new to waze.

Yes map data is downloaded automatically at app startup. It's not installed as an app database. When I set route navigation and then drive outside of cell coverage I don't lose my map because it's already downloaded. But if I haven't requested a navigation route first I often temporarily lose map data if outside of cell coverage area. If the map data were stored in the app itself this wouldn't happen.

As long as you have an internet connection, your maps will always be up to date.

Never got older versions of Waze to run properly on 7.0 so I keep an eye on my screen as I drive.

no iphone users have figured this out yet? Well im on a jailbroken iphone X running the latest Waze version. Im going to dig around in the application files to see what i find. If i can find where to edit, I may be able to make a request on r/sideloaded or r/jailbreak for a modified version of Waze app that has an increased alert distance. Ill try to get around to this in the next day or two. No guarantees on what ill find though. I mean, Im fairly confident ill be able to find the file(s) to edit on my phone, but i know that not that many ios users can or will jailbreak their devices, which means we need a modified app file (*.IPA) that non-jailbroken users can sideload onto their device using a tool like Extender

I think you can change those, but they're reset to the default distance once waze connects online. It might have changed since someone tried it earlier... let us know.

Definitely will. I hope that’s not the case. And remember, even if this works for me, currently this would only be a viable option for users who can jailbreak. If it does work, however, it may be possible to get a modified IPA file that can be loaded onto non-jb devices. (I also need to be careful with mine, bc if I screw it up I’ll be forced to flash to the latest firmware and lose the jailbreak)
I may have time to look tonight but I need to finish dinner and other irl stuff. Keep you posted
