Yeah, what everyone else said. I forgot to add that I tried to change the name, access, and etc of the preferences file and though the file and etc was still there, the newest versions + of Waze just don't use the preferences file anymore for most of its parameters unfortunately. They are "intentionally" locking us down lol

Thanks for doing this! Just made the changes and I'm excited to go try 'em out. :hfive:

Quick note.. the 1st link to 4shared I can't find the actual download link. Most of the download buttons are fake and try and get you to download spyware to your phone. The second one at foo.or8.com is excellent because it goes straight to the apk.

Also, the phone wouldn't let me downgrade to 3.7.8.0. I had to uninstall Waze first and then fresh install this older version.

This is going to be fun. I did a bunch of changes this morning, including police alert distances, deleting the Hazard sound file, deleting categories of weather alerts etc. Let's see if the damn thing even works....;)

Does Waze have to be the main window open and visible, with the phone unlocked, to have "Police reported ahead" announced? Waze has been oddly quiet using the listed 3.7.8.0 version compared to the current versions, and I noticed today that on a known and reported Red Light Camera, Waze only announced once I brought it up to the main window. I usually have Waze running in the background with the screen off/phone locked and use it for the announcements only. Any way to confirm if this is the case?

I've been running the latest Android version of Waze in the background with Escort Live in the foreground recently and I'm still getting the hazard and police warning from Waze while it's in the background. It seems quieter though, I should flip between them next time and see if it's still giving all alerts while in the background.

Thanks, let me know how it performs. It is strange because I still get the "Heavy traffic ahead" and "Accident reported ahead," but I have yet to hear a 'law enforcement' announcement if Waze is in the background. That was not the case on the latest version, but unfortunately the new versions have a locked preference file with the absurd warning distances.

Is there a way to force certain apps to NOT update?

I'd like to say "update all" now, but I have to manually update each app individually now to ensure that Waze doen't get updated.

I did the downgrade (uninstalled and reinstalled old version) and distance hacks before my trip, but something isn't right. I drove right through one marked trap on my side without a warning, and now have a 0.3 mile warning distance!

Double checked each hacked line. Using the hacks in the OP and ggarrett 's ad hack lines. Verified 3.7.8.0 version is installed.

Add: uninstalled, deleted the Waze folder, reinstalled and redid the preferences hacks. I'll do some more test driving today.

Sometimes I still get short warnings, even though I can see the icon on the map. You might try one of the fake gps apps and slowly "drive" up to an alert to verify you are always getting short warnings. Other than that, my only suggestion would be to clear your cache (will probably lose your user info, though)

Is the cache in the Waze folder?

I uninstalled, whacked the Waze folder and reinstalled, and redid the OP's hacks. Had to reinput my user info. I'm in a larger area now (Buffalo), so checking it should be easier.

ADD: ggarrett, I found the Waze app cache and cleared it. Haven't been out to test yet.

It seems warnings depend on the amount of "Zoom" there is on the map page. If I am zoomed out to see more roadway distance I get different alerts than when zoomed in. I have to zoom in quite close to get Police alerts even though I can see icon on screen when zoomed out.

Worked like a charm. Just a heads up for a less intrusive file manager; might want to try Total Commander.

Thanks for the tutorial!
Yup, I ditched Astro and went with Total Commander. Much easier to use.

with Titanium Backup root you can just go in and hit "detach app from market" and it's done.
Have they fixed it? I was reading on XDA that the feature was broken, and it would 'reattach' itself after you reset your phone. The method posted creates an entirely separate APK so Google Services is unable to cache the app again.

Thank you for this research, it was a big help. One issue though, download option #1 kept bouncing me around to apps other than Waze for download on my Galaxy S III. Option #2 was great.
Thanks again.

I'm trying to access the Waze 3.7.8.0 file on Astro File Manager to edit out the Dunkin Donuts and gas station ads.
But i can't get into the file: I get a screen that says "Do you want to install an update….etc"
I have a cancel button and an install button. If I hit cancel, I close the Waze file.
I don't want to update, but apparently I can't get past this screen.

Anyone have this problem and is there a fix for this?

Thanks

Dana
