Anyone know anything about the serial/uart connection on the S7 8500 X50? I believe it's pins 1 and 6 on the power jack. I'm betting it's very similar to all newer detectors that the Live cable works with since when I use my Live cable, it boots up and blinks "REV I 21" on the screen 3 times before rebooting which I'm guessing is telling me the firmware is too old to work with a Live cable. (duh)

I'd like to poke around and see if I can obtain any useful data over it since I've basically retired my 8500 X50, so it has become an electronics bench toy to poke and prod.

Question for you. What is the FCCID on the bottom of this detector - if you still have it all these years later?

So what I'm interested in is understanding how the software revisions line up with the different models and platforms.

I know there is the S7 based 8500, and the M4 based 8500.

I have some questions like are all M4 based 8500's - 8500 X50's?

I still use mine in California for ka band only
It works great because I think it does not get below 33.8 ghz, so it has no me need for bsm filtering.

My 8500 x50 is branded as an x50 on top, however it has an S7 FCCID on the back. Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but does the case color (silver vs. black) play into which horn was inside? I think I’ve mostly seen 8500 x50 Black’s with the M4 Horn.

My impression is the black ones are a newer model, but I might be wrong.

Yeah, the original S7 version was silver, then the M4 version came out also in silver and I believe that's when they also offered a blue LED display for an extra $50.

S7 and early M4 8500 X50's lack enough internal memory to run the Escort Live compatible firmware.'

Later a black version was released that was also an M4.

At least according to Escort. Was never sure whether that was really true or just a ploy on Escort's part to boost sales of new detectors. Nonetheless, you cannot update the fw of an S7 based detector over Escort Live.

This brings back memories of escort offering the “tune-up” to add TSR and then getting excited and then finding out my silver X50 did not qualify- too old. :catstare:

Also the S7 is Discontinued and no longer serviceable by Escort/Beltronics.The RX65 S7 was a Beast on 34.7 Ka!

Here is my black 8500x50. Still use it for Ka only in CA. Works decent on/off axis.
FCC Id # QKLX5M4
Serial # 0294 1347 xxx3
122145

FYI off topic: I owned quite a few 9500xi (about 6) and they made a lighter weight one, that was in their newer builds. I'm not sure why it was lighter, but it weighed about half as much as older units. I've only owned one 8500 x50. (I used to buy and sell them on Craigslist).

Ha, I have the same one I pulled out of my desk draw next to me as well.
Sometimes, I'll pull it out when I'm really bored. I'll only ever run it when I'm in CT though, because I shut off K band and you can *almost* get away with doing that down there. Up here around Boston, however, there's way too much K band and 35.5 for it to be of much use.

I've taken it out a couple time, but never run it, just played with settings to see how it reacts with K off or Ka off and to see what the latch time used to be. It was interesting to see how fast it reacted to K when Ka was off, I do remember that, however I could not imaging ever running it on my WS again. It is a 'museum piece' for me now.

It's most annoying feature is the ability to false constantly on Ka to BSM's. Tons of 34.0xx punch thru's that I assume are just K band signals overdriving the detector. It becomes tiresome very quickly
