    Question Permanent Windshield Mounting Methods

The title of this thread may be a tad misleading, because 'Windshield Mount' is referring to the type of detector. It does not necessarily mean it 'must' mount on the windshield. It can be mounted on the windshield, visor, rear view mirror, headliner, top of dash, etc. I'm looking for ideas for a more rugged method of attaching the RD to the car.

Why? As the outside temperatures are soaring where I live, the good old suction cup mounts for my stuff are failing. Even if they are replaced with new, I expect the replacements to fail too in short order. From looking at what some others have done, it is apparent to me that like jammer installs, one method does not meet all needs. There is an element of creativity to it, and who knows better than you guys?

Some options I have come up with so far:
    • Glue the suction cups, so they stick no matter what
    • Clear silicone adhesive in the suction cups (as above, members are doing this)
    • Visor clip
    • Blend mount to the rear view mirror (my least favorite)
    • Beanbag dash mount
    • Custom mounting brackets or mods to the original
    • Aftermarket RAM mount
    • Visor Pouch
    • 5 Minute Epoxy
    • Rear deck in an enclosure

    Not As Permanent:
    • petroleum jelly on the cups
    • Plexiglass attached with other adhesives
What do you do to provide a more durable mount for your prized radar detector? Do you have any ideas that aren't listed here? Please share, I will add to the list.

This is my Radar Detector. There are many others like it, but this one is mine. My Radar Detector is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. Without me, my Radar Detector is useless. Without my Radar Detector, I am useless. I must use my Radar Detector actively. I must evade my enemy, who is trying to ticket me. I must detect him before he shoots me. I will. Before God I swear this creed: my Radar Detector and myself are defenders of my community, we are the masters of our enemy, we are the saviors of my life. So be it, until there is no speed limit, but freedom to speed. Amen.

I'd like to see something to put on the glass, but something thats not visible outside the car. I don't like that my suction cups are the only thing not stealth about where I have mine. (they stand out to me at least, idk if everyone else can see them well).

Well you see that car traveling at 82mph is endangering the lives of the citizens of the great state of Georgia.
So they must have officer to accelerate up to 110+ to catch the criminal in question for your safety.

If I do make the aluminum block to glue, I'll end up posting it here so anyone else can use the idea. I'd love to see what RadarRob uses for this purpose.

Stick your RD inside a visor pouch, cut holes as needed for display and laser sensors, put on visor, bingo! Stealthy RD install shielded from the sun that won't fall off the windshield.

I have added this one to the list. It seems like it should have been obvious, but there is is now.

The only downside I can see to this and the visor clip mount is that you lose use of the visor. It also would seem that your visor needs to be level. Perhaps a little foam stuck on the back of the visor would help with that (if needed)

I'm thinking that the RadarRob things or aluminum blocks might provide a permanent mount to glass, but I don't know if it would be any less visible than the suction cups. That is, unless you mount behind a tint strip.

Use the standard windshield mount that comes with a RD, but instead of using the suction cups, use high quality heavy-duty self-adhesive Velcro squares. Be sure the windshield is clean at the mounting location.

I have one of the mounts from Radarrob that was mentioned above. It's a permanent mount as far as I can tell as I believe if it would be removed the bonding material would be destroyed. It does work quite well but is visible from the outside.
