    GRE PSR-800

I just purchased this scanner and it was delivered today. I thought this model would be the easiest to use. It is much smaller than I thought it would be. The pictures below show it next to my Galaxy Nexus.

The scanner is very easy to navigate. I was able to have 5 scan lists built in a couple minutes. I could not find my local city police on the database though. I am sure this is due to the fact that I had never messed around with a scanner until today. This is almost like using an iPod.

I had only had the scanner operational for around 5 minutes when an armed bank robbery took place in my county. It was pretty cool listening to all the units swarming the area. I hope this helps me while I travel. I spend a lot of time in Colorado and the signs that say area patrolled by aircraft drive me crazy. This is why I bought the new toy. I will update this as I become more familiar with the unit.

I ordered a much better antenna that will not be here until Tuesday.

The problem with scanners today is many departments are switching to digital and encrypted, I have not been able to listen to local PD in years since they switched over.

the 800 is digital capable: AM, FM, NFM, P25, MOT, EDACS, LTR, CTCSS, DCS - Only one digital system that NO scanner can receive is Harris Corp 'open sky'. (and any encrypted systems like Florida)

Several local departments here switched to digital unencrypted....but the local SWAT runs digital encrypted.

This thing is pretty cool. I went to the radio reference web site and used it to navigate through the 800. I found everything I was looking for.

Can I assume the radio chatter that sounds like a robot is digital? I often hear it on my radio scanner app these days especially with State Police. A very compact unit by the way...would love something like that.

If you're listening through a scanner app on your phone, I wouldn't necessarily assume that sound means the department's radios are digital - could be the radios, or something between the feed's scanner and the app. That robot sound is the result of some digital audio packets getting dropped somewhere along the way though.

The RadioReference database will tell you if your local department's radios are digital or analog.

    Awesome scanner. Enjoy!!!
"Few of the cars had the telltale sign of a Valentine 1 radar detector - two small circles on the windshield, indication that one had been suction-mounted, pulled down, and stashed away. What little evidence I spotted was of other detector models (which I considered no better than bricks) mounted low and/or off center- proof of ignorance at how radar detectors work." - Alex Roy

    Re: GRE PSR-800

Congrats. It's a great little scanner. This is currently the only one that is able to pick up Phase X2 (TDMA) digital systems like they use in PG County, MD. However, APCO P25 Phase 2 (TDMA digital, but not X2) is coming on line now. Current Bearcat scanners have no hope of picking up Phase 2 since they cannot do TDMA. The PSR-800 receives TDMA right now, but not phase 2. It might be possible that the PSR-800 will be able to gain this capability with a firmware update. Which reminds me, check GRE's website periodically; they actually do put out firmware updates.

GRE has announced the PSR-900 which looks to be just a re-packaged PSR-800. However, it could be that the PSR-900 will have APCO P25 Phase 2 capability. That would be great. But don't hold your breath. For Bearcat, we'll have to wait for a new generation of scanners from them to support Phase 2.

Another trend, so it seems, is more and more departments are going to encrypted traffic. When digital transmissions are encrypted correctly with a decent algorithm, like AES, then it would require a tremendous effort to break it and hear the transmission; this is -- for all intents and purposes -- unbreakable. Even if you could break it, FCC regulations state that it is illegal to do so. On the PSR-800, a little "E" icon appears when it detects encrypted digital transmissions. You can also set what you hear when it pics up an encrypted signal: silence, noise or a tone.

    Cheers.

    Re: GRE PSR-800

I have been pleased with the unit so far. I have had one save and have listened to some crazy incidents. I am using a new 15" antenna that works better but not great. I am going to buy a magnetic roof mount for a new whip antenna. I bought a Anli RD-88H, that is portable. Do you have any recommendations on a magnetic mount for this scanner?
